Anita Sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn just turned online harassment into a woman's problem
#16
I have heard the claim, but I've never seen any definitivee proof. I've only seen screenshots with unattributed quotes that people claim are Zoe and people claiming that her username was 'this' or 'that' or 'something else'.

If they're all right than Zoe is a dirt bag. Just in about five minutes of looking things up she apparently had about fourteen different accounts, quit her job in 2005 to devote it to running her Helldump account(s) full time, and gave out awards to her friends for helping get a girl to commit suicide.

I find the whole claim somewhat dubious, given the repetitive attacks against her. Similar to the ones where somebody claimed that Anita admitted to them on a forum that she had faked the death threats against her, simply to get noticed.

Even if she did have a Something Awful forum account, that doesn't really prove she was part of Helldump. It certainly doesn't prove she doxxed a girl into a suicidal fit, either. That's the fun thing about the internet...if someone on here started a conversation about how great Fascists were and then went out and shot somebody, this place would become a 'forum about Fascism' on the news.

Well, she did fake having her tumblr and twitter were hacked to garner support once.

In addition, the phone numbers included in the Tumblr dox post were found to have no connection with Zoe. The number listed as “Dad’s Work” is no longer functional and was associated with a closed down motorcycle store called, “Twin-Tech Motorcycle Shop.” The number that was listed as “zoe’s Cellphone” connected to a text to land line phone located in Hawaii.
She also conspired with /r/gaming mods to assist in hiding that she was using DMCA claims to remove criticism of her work.

Considering that, I'm not trusting this.

So I did actually catch on this now and there are a few things that are worth bringing up.

Firstly Polygon have no Agenda that they're pushing. They are not for or against this recent event, only that they are merely reporting it. I've read it 3 times over but there isn't any statement of Polygon saying that they support and/or will help Zoe and Anita in their efforts. It's stating the current events. I could quote any random paragraph and you'll see there is nothing in any one of them that states Polygons stance on the matter
However, even if it did, that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. This is about stopping cyber bullying, it might be cyber bullying against females online specifically, but I can't see why even if Polygon did support them, that it would be bad. But again, they aren't.

Secondly, as usual, this entire event has been blown far out of proportion and taken completely out of context. I like most of ReviewTechUSAs stuff...most. Where Rich got the:
Quote:Anita And Zoe Turn "Everyone's Problem" Into A "Woman's Problem"
When that isn't the case. The point of this event is discuss online interaction but this speech, just so happens to be based on gender. But this is Rich completely jumping the gun and missing the point completely.  Nothing about this states that online harassment is strictly about women.
As for AlphaOmegaSin. C'mon, the thumbnail states
Quote:Anita Sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn got the UN to promote Internet Censorship.
The guy is a fully erect cock. he's like YouTube comments rolled into one (My cyber bullying).

Lastly I think the question then is what's the point of this? If it's not obvious, these speeches (which the UN WEB has done many of) is to discuss women issues that are faced online. It's strictly about women's issues. It's not about how the white male is privileged and they are the reason the world sucks, it's about how to stop cyber bullying for women and how we can make it  a better place. Enforcing rules like "don't be a racist, sexist arsehole" isn't called censorship and being banned for it is your fault. There are plenty of seminars, lectures and speeches you can find online about what it's like to be black, Chinese, gay, transgender etc in certain environments. None of them, or the ones I've watched, actually state who specifically is the problem. It's just people being dickheads online. In this case, Zoe and Anita who have faced many accounts of cyber bullying as a women, use their experiences to educate others and present possible ideas. I get the idea that people who read these articles and react like AlphaOmegaSin think "well if they didn't mean me, then they must be talking about me being the hateful person online".

If anyone did watch the video that was posted they would know what was said. If not, which I think is many, I time stamped some of the key points.

1:26 Zoe Quinn talks about the importance of being able to talk online. It can be used for good and/or bad. It's helpful for people with issues that don't want to talk to people physically.
Zoe Quinns Goal here is to try and push the idea that people who are differently(an easy target) have a safe environment for those people.

1:33 Anita discusses the importance of having these safe environments so online users won't fear intimidation.

Also I have to state, GamerGate is fucking dumb. I'm not a feminist. I actually don't agree with a lot of what Anita says. I'm not on anyone's side.
