Your Top 5 Overrated Games
#31
And I nearly forgot what my 5th game was again. lol

5) Battlefield: Bad Company 2

I loved Bad Company. I thought it was a great and hilarious game. Probably one of the best military stories in games. But man, did BC2 just fall so flat. Story was boring and uninteresting. Not a single part of it was funny. And the multiplayer, at least at launch and when I gave up playing it, was boring and you were pretty much forced to play with friends to actually have good teammates. Oh, and it didn't have conquest mode so I gave up and traded it in like a week after I bought it.

I'm not saying it's a bad game, but at launch, IMO, it was a mess and just wasn't fun. I still have no urge to get the game again and try to play the multiplayer. I think I would suck majorly after playing BF3 for so long.

Skyrim, Borderlands series, Hotline Miami, the first Deus Ex game, and the Assassin's Creed games.

Despite me being grossly obsessed with Minecraft, I'd have to agree that its a very overrated game. And to be honest; its not a very well designed game either.

The stupid thing can't decide what it wants to be. Is it a sandbox game? Action RPG? A combat game? A dungeon crawler? I can't tell. Speaking of which, the enemy combat is sloppy at best. It makes you feel like a child thats just whacking stuff with a stick until it falls over. There is only 1 enemy in the game that I recall that require some kind of battle strategy, it being Creepers. But Creepers are just running back and forth to make sure it doesn't explode. Redundant.

Graphics are also so lazy. I hate that it tries to pass the crap graphics as "retro" but it has no excuse. Some people say the game couldn't work at all without them but thats bull; just look at many of the Minecraft clones. They're gorgeous.

Minecraft never teaches the player the mechanics as he plays, it just plops you in a desolate world and expects you to get through the first night without a bed and not bore yourself to death.

The game feels empty. I know its a game where you're supposed to feel isolated, but with the existence of NPC's, Witch Characters, and other things, the feeling is ruined. For that matter, what is the purpose of them? Whats the story behind everything? What is The End, why does the Nether exist, why do all the NPC's look like Squidward but you don't?! WHY. I get the feeling its up for interpretation similar to Portal, but it doesn't do that particularly well.

And finally, what is Minecraft's goal exactly? In Pokemon, you have to beat all the Gym Leaders and beat the Champion. Half Life, you gotta beat the Alien Guys. In Minecraft... you gotta survive? Okay, whats my incentive to do so? Why should I care if Steve lives or not? This is the element that makes Minecraft soulless. Its just a soulless, empty void. The single player gets boring very quickly, and there isn't anything to spice it up. Multiplayer with friends it loads of fun though.

To give Notch your moneyyyy~

Edit: I don't think most games themselves are overrated, just over-saturated.

Assassin's Creed is a game about stabbing dudes and doing stuff that leads to stabbing dudes. Assassin's Creed 2 is a game about stabbing dudes in new ways and some more stuff that leads to stabbing dudes. Assassin's Creed Brotherhood is a game about stabbing dudes with friends. Assassin's Creed Revelations is a game where you stabbed dudes sometimes. Then your buddies do the stabbing for you while you play tower defense. Assassin's Creed 3 is a game where you ride on a ship and pretend you are a pirate, also there are some Brits or something.

I don't mind Call of Duty games, but the later titles don't add a whole lot to warrant sequel after sequel. One of the main reasons everyone praises COD4 is because it was really different from its older World War brothers.

Angry Birds is a fun pick-up-and-play puzzle game, however there is a lot of merchandising centered around it. (Remember when Pokemon was on everything too?)

New Mario is like old Mario, but that's the problem with New Mario being old Mario. Nobody wants to play new old Mario, because they already played new old Mario. Everyone just wants some new new Mario.

Kingdom Hearts is a fan fiction wet dream that involves smacking stuff with a key, which is some kind of metaphor, and there are a lot of sequels and spin-offs about this.

And that was my real top 5.

At least I never saw Pokémon coffee, nail polish, sun tan or HDMI cables. At this point it just feels that they are slapping a logo on everything even when it has absolytely nothing to differentiate it from everything else.

There isn't one. You make your own goals. It's kind of the whole point of Minecraft.

Minecraft is basically just legos. When playing with Legos, do they tell you how to build what you want (not one of those dedicated things)? No. You're supposed to just go with it and make what you want.

Minecraft has 2 ways of playing it. Surviving or building.

I take it you haven't tried a cup of the Pikachu Blend? It's electric!

After a while, that just gets boring, though. If a game has no goal, then there is no reward for your work. There is no feeling of accomplishment when there is no end goal to strive for.

You could argue that building/surviving is the end goal, but that only lasts so long before you wish to do other things, things that actually challenge you. This is the same problem I have with all sandbox games. If you are allowed complete and utter freedom, you get bored over time. You want a challenge from the game, you want the game to tell you to stop dicking around and go do something important, something that actually requires skill and overcoming some sort of challenge.

I'm not saying people who like Minecraft are stupid for liking it, I'm just saying they need a better argument than "you make your own goals," because there are only two goals: building and surviving, as you said before.

Actually I did not. I said that there are two ways of playing the game. Surviving and building. I never said that those were actual goals. The whole point of Minecraft is for you to make your own goals. There is no other way of explaining it. Don't like that absolute freedom in a game, then clearly Minecraft isn't for you.

The only reason those games are popular are because of the infamous cutscenes.

Random thing: I played Minecraft by turning off the enemies and whatnot and just explored the world and caves and whatnot. Also, I'm a weirdo.

My list in no particular order:

1. Kingdom Hearts - I did not like that battle system. And the story just seemed silly. KHII improved on the first bit, but I still find the first game overrated for what it is.
2. Phantasy Star II - This one is a little harder to say, since it seems people are torn between II and IV being their favorite PS game. Anyway, it's very difficult and grind-y for no reason and while there's a couple interesting story bits I'm sure, I'll never get to see them because flies knock me over in a hit. Then again, I've heard even the story bits haven't aged that well.
3. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - I'm sure the game was great back in the day... but it's aged very poorly. I've played for about fifteen hours, but the clunkiness of everything makes it hard to enjoy... or even not die constantly. I might just be bad at the game, but sheesh!
4. I ran out of ideas already. I was thinking Fallout 3, but I couldn't think of a reason.
5. Um... I'll probably love it, but Skyrim is very likely overrated just by being Skyrim.

1: Call of Duty: I realize that every person within a thousand mile radius of an internet connection has already said this but I have to repeat myself (and most likely your thoughts). Why is this game so popular? It seems incredibly average in gameplay and the story is almost nonexistent. Again I'm just sort of preaching to the choir.
2: Gears of War: Incredibly unlikable characters that act like college frat boys with one too many "brewskis". The color palette is brown, brown and a lighter shade of brown. Also while the 3rd person shooting element was revolutionary for it's time (debatable seeing as I remember playing Winback with the same style back on the N64) it's been outdone at this point due to games like Vanquish and Spec Ops: The Line. Again, preaching to the choir.
3: Mafia II: A story that's too predictable and an open-world that is (while detailed) incredibly empty.
4: Dragon Age II: Pretty much inferior in every way to Origins. The stripping down of what once was a very hardcore oriented RPG game left something that was hollow and not quite sure what it wanted to be. Is it Mass Effect: Fantasy? or is it Dragon Age that's too streamlined. I don't know all I know is that critics seemed to love this game a bit too much in my opinion.
5: Far Cry 3: Unlikable characters (outside of Vaas who admittedly is awesome) and the story starts to seem too "THE CHOSEN ONE" after Vaas thinks you're dead for the 7th time. I really don't understand how they expect me to like any of these spoiled kids. but I do think it's a great game in it's own right with an incredible world that really seems to be alive.

1. Skyrim
2. Skyrim
3. Skyrim
4. Skyrim
5. Tetris No I am sorry I mean Skyrim.

I bought into this games hype and how it was suppose to be amazing and bought it first day then promptly thought shit I just wasted sixty dollars. The story is generic game play is repetitive and easy, its riddled with glitches and suffers from frame rate slow down. Now recently people told me this was fixed with patches so since I was already half way through the damn game I patched and played and still suffered glitches, frame rate slow down and boring repetitive combat. Beat the game and gave it away so some one else can suffer the most over hyped RPG of all time.

So yeah I hate Skyrim.
