The name Okami is actually sort of play on words.
The word Okami when written like this (狼), the word Okami means wolf, but when written like this (大神, this is the kanji used in the game's logo) it means "great deity".

This is a reference to the fact that the main character, Amaterasu, is a wolf who is also the reincarnation of the sun goddess.
