Adventures in Pokemon Yellow (Virtual Console)
#1
...Not sure if people will find this as interesting as I do, but I thought since I'm screwing around and finding interesting stuff I would just keep it all in one place.

First off, why Pokemon Yellow? Because Red/Blue will only play in black and white or that ugly green color if press certain things. I first played Pokemon on a Gameboy Color and wanted as close to the experience I had as a kid. Plus, all glitches are retained, and being able to get all three starters is pretty great. In other words, Pikachu is gonna get boxed.

Here's my story so far...

Things started off normally enough until I reached Viridian Forest where I intentionally didn't fight one trainer. This is the glitch I intended to perform:

However, my memory is terrible and I am rusty, so I initially executed it wrong. I don't know why it has to be this way, but you MUST beat all the trainers in the Forest except for the one specific Bug Catcher before losing to the trainer in Brock's gym. Otherwise the Teleport glitch will result in the message "Sssh! You'll scare the bugs away!" upon entering the Forest before being thrown into a fight with a Bug Catcher and the game then becoming unplayable because button presses only result in noises playing, or a Lickitung will appear if you beat him.

Normally that Gengar is hard AF to catch, but it only took me one try... If you don't count my first successful attempt at spawning him, where he fainted Pikachu thanks to confusing AND paralyzing him.

You can absolutely destroy Brock because the game doesn't expect you to have a Ghost Pokemon so early. None of the attacks affect Gengar and all he can do is use Potions and Full Heals. Some trainers are the same way and it's weird to see an Ekans use Wrap, the game saying its attack is continuing when you hit "Fight", but no damage being done since it doesn't affect Gengar.

Another thing I've discovered is that it doesn't seem like the Virtual Console version of Yellow can handle Missingno. The first time I encountered him the game was stuck on a black screen for a very long time and froze almost immediately when it finally did appear with a toning noise continuing to play. The second time was even worse with yellow bars filling the screen and the game sounded like it was screaming.

Next is a little something I'll just copy and paste from the Free Gaming thread:

I discovered something neat in Pokemon Yellow; not sure if you'll get exactly the same result in Red/Blue.

You know that trick where you take a step and Teleport away just as an exclamation point goes up above a trainer's head, you then get into a battle, and then you walk until you trigger a random encounter in a location where one shouldn't occur? There's a person in the entrance to the tunnel that leads to Vermilion City. If you talk to them after doing the Teleport and battle, then walk up Nugget Bridge, you will always fight a level 80 Starmie instead. I tried this a few times and it continued to happen.

I think the Cubone that person wants to trade has something to do with Starmie appearing, but I have no idea what makes it be level 80.

Notable Pokemon I have caught/seen so far using the glitch, up to Viridian City, are as follows:

Gengar
Mew
Nidoqueen
Rhyhorn
Chansey (nearly 10 Pokeballs to catch)
Mr. Mime
Lickitung
Magmar (also VERY hard to catch)
Pinsir

I remember the Teleport glitch causing some other crazy stuff to happen in Red, so hopefully I'll have more to post about later!

Is it possible to get screenshots in virtual console? That could help. Gors on Resource did something similar a while back.

I have no idea. Hopefully I can be descriptive enough through text.

Oh, one thing I never caught after all these years! The head chef in the SS Anne boat actually has two different dialogues that might appear when you speak to him, which I thought was strange. He'll mention making either a salmon or an eel dish.

OK, so the Virtual Console version CANNOT handle Missingno. At all. It with either freeze or crash hard.

Right now I'm really, really upset because I think I've permanently messed up my save file and need to restart. After the Teleport glitch I fought a Channel and then headed left to where you're supposed to use the underground tunnel to reach Celadon City to trigger what I expected to be a random encounter.

I think the text was "Let's roll the dice!" before a Gambler fought me with two Poliwags and a Poliwhirl that were all at level 22. After that happen, a text box with nonsense popped up before a Gambler with the exact same team fought me. After that I healed at the Pokemon Center and then made my fatal mistake... I saved.

Now when I try to head left my character's movements are extremely laggy and the Start button will not work. However, it's fine anywhere else. Snorlax has vanished thanks to my screwing around so I guess I could just try and take the bottom path and go around; maybe after some more fights and such the game will fix itself? Only thing is that I need that Gambler that's near the entrance to the tunnel to keep doing the glitch with. You cannot catch an Electabuzz in Yellow under normal circumstances but I know which Biker makes him spawn after using the glitch.

This never happened when I screwed around with the Game Boy version. The game's clock says I have 11 hours in but I know it's a lot more because of how much I've experimented. If I can't get it to fix itself by the next time I play I think it will be a long time before I feel like restarting again and my adventure has come to an abrupt end.

I wonder what exactly causes that problem. Maybe there are multiple versions of Yellow or its an emulation error.

Yeah, I absolutely HAVE to restart; there's more problems than I realized. I went to change Pokemon boxes and was shocked to discover that it said about 5 of mine were full. I checked and they're full of glitched Pokemon. When I tried to release them, the game crashed. There's no saving this.

Got more info on what happened, but not why the game suddenly forced glitched Pokemon on me as well.

At least I know better for next time ><

Bleh. So I'm in Pewter City. Got my Gengar back and blew my cash on Escape Ropes and Pokeballs.

I've caught a Lickitung and Exeggcute as well, the freaking Lickitung not wanting to stay in the ball at all. I'm pretty sure it took six tries even with him paralyzed and down to 1 HP.

Other than that really nothing that neat comes out from screwing around. Kinda weird that Gengar likes to keep showing up, though.

This really sucks. I'm losing all motivation to regain my place because things aren't going quite as smoothly as my first play through even though I have a better idea of what I'm doing. Initially I got really lucky and caught an Abra first try by just chucking a Pokeball at it but this time I can't catch one to save my life.
