This would be friken amazing if the xbox wasn't super easy to soft mod and put games on a disk. But it's also super easy to record gameplay and streaming on the other hand.

You gotta think about the long term really.

Sure, it's not too difficult to play Xbox games, but at the same time wouldn't you want to play the game in 1080p Pseudo-widescreen with 8XAA?

That's the true beauty of the emulator right now. In 4-5 years (if development is good, and the devs keep getting money) we could be seeing some pretty amazing stuff on the emulator.

I mean take the Gamecube, you can apparently make it play burnt games by just having a small disc hold the data, but wouldn't you rather emulate the game in 1080p, Widescreen, 8XAA and in 3D? It just beat it out of the park.

While I totally agree that often it is very easy to pirate games on the actual hardware, and I don't really give a shit about making games look nicer via emulation, emulators can be very good at making games play better.

Take for example, Ocarina of Time. The game is severely hindered by the N64, to the point that it's max FPS is 20. Playing the game @ 60FPS with a Gamecube controller on Dolphin is like night and day.

SNES emulators have removed Super FX lag, making games like Starfox actually playable, and allowing mouse and keyboard for console only games (for example, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Timesplitters, or even Metroid Prime) can offer a new experience, and in the case of the first three, make them way more fun to play (imo).

I'm curious to see where this emulator can go considering how difficult Xbox emulation is.

I'm kinda surprised this didn't happen sooner to be honest.

There is a severe lack of documentation regarding the Xbox and how it works, meaning people were essentially working from scratch. It even stumped Microsoft when they added Xbox emulation to the 360, since they also had to essentially reverse engineer the Xbox in software. This lack of documentation is reason the 360 isn't fully backwards compatible, and why games were added over time. This is unlike the PS2, where the PS1 was fully documented, so the PS2 can emulate it perfectly and every game is compatible.

If you remember that story where a guy found an Xbox dev kit and wiped it and people were pissed, this is the reason why. That dev kit would've been the golden ticket to Xbox emulation.

That's also why there have been several failed Xbox emulators over the years, and why this emulator is so impressive, even in it's current rough state.

Other consoles, like the Nintendo 64 or the Sega Saturn, face similar issues in emulation, but those are regarding how the consoles were built. The N64's issues are so bad that emulating the Wii emulating the N64 is actually more stable and has more compatibility than emulating the N64 itself.

Just a quick reminder of forum rules.
Discussion of emulators is fine, but posting links to roms and that isn't.

So far so good on this thread, though !
