In Mini Mario & Friends: Amiibo Challenge, the Mini Toad has a special power called the Small Crawl where it would squeeze down into tight spaces:
How did they come up with the idea of the Mini Toads having that for their special ability? Every Mini's special power is based off something. It just might so happen to be a reference to how the Mushroom power ups in the Mario Franchise move around, even through tight spaces that Mario himself can't get through when he has a power up with him:
The Mini Toads while doing so even seem to slightly resemble Super Mushrooms (these may be images, but I already showed videos of the Small Crawl and the Super Mushrooms in action during this Trivia Evidence piece):
