We're Moving!
#1
We're moving to our new server today. The move will take place over the next few hours and we'll be leaving VGFacts for last to give it the most up-time in the process. When we begin the move here though, I'll need to shut this site down completely in order to prevent data loss. At that point, the forum and main site will be closed and no activity will be possible until the move is complete.

We don't anticipate a lot of down-time as we'll be working to make this transition as smooth as possible but it's still important that you know what's going on in case the site does disappear for a couple of hours.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Thanks in advance for your patience!

I hope the facts that have not been approved will be fine. That's my only worry as I trust that everything will be fine when you guys come back. Good luck with the move.

*Reads topic title* "We're moving!"

*Thinks* Great, this site isn't even 2 months old and we're already abandoning it. Nice. Just as soon as everyone gets settled in, BAM, have to move yet again.

*Reads the post* Oh, ok. Phew!

Get on board or get left behind to be ravaged by spam bots.

The intention in the move is actually to add capacity as everybody is fully committed to VGFacts!

The new server is much, much more powerful than the hardware we're currently on and is going to give the guys a lot of room for growth.

I haven't seen a single spam bot yet.

They lurk in the night for unsuspected new members.

I really hope this goes smoothly. The last server migration I saw had them lose their entire data because of a rogue hacker that managed to figure out the admin password.

Don't worry, nobody would ever guess the root password was Alligator1.

So, will the code be changing, etc., how long will this take, and will it be happening today or yesterday?
by code I mean like bbcode

You'll know when it happens, the board and submission system will go offline for a couple of hours, you'll see a notice saying "You're still on the old server, what are you doing?! Join the fun!". This will happen while the DNS propogates over from the old IP addresses to the new ones. When it's complete you'll be on the new site on the new server like nothing changed.

Nothing at all will change in regards to the BBCode or even the way the website is programmed itself, this server move is simply to give us the capacity we need in order to expand all of the sites on the network. Server hardware moves at an incredibly fast pace and being on a server for over a year means you're on outdated hardware - rather than letting that continue the decision was made that we should get the best server we can for what we pay. That's the reasoning behind this move so don't think too much in to it, nothing will change in a major way except the site might load a little quicker.

As long as I get to hear and post interesting facts, I am content.
