Alright peeps, time to talk about the game that has literally made people cry with the announcement. As Bumblee said we should probably make our own threads for this so I thought I'd "kickstart" the Shenmue thread.
If you haven't played or at least heard of Shenmue before the announcement something is seriously wrong with you and I suggest getting medical help in two Dreamcast doses.
Seriously tho'. This is the perfect time to get into the series if you haven't. I'll give an adbriged version of the story. You play as 18 year old Ryo Hazuki who came home one day to find his dojo broken into and a mysterious man fighting his father. After the mysterious man threatens to kill you, your father finally gives the man what he wants and in doing so the mysterious man kills your father. You don't mourn, you don't cry. You get revenge.
As for how to play the first two games. They can be emulated fairly easily on NullDC (if you need help setting up PM me). The first game has English voice acting, while the second game doesn't but has english subs if you play the PAL version. Recently though you are able to take the Xbox Audio and play it on NullDC, although the sound is very low quality.
The second game is on the Xbox and if played on a 360 can be upscaled to 720p. This version you can't emulate but is a lot more common and easier to use. If you can't emulate them or afford them for either Dreamcast or Xbox, but own a Dreamcast. You can easily burn Shenmue onto a disc and play it on your Dreamcast (As long as it was made before October 2000)
Anyhow, enough of the first two this thread is mainly for discussion of Shenmue 3. Even though I think I'm the only person who actually gave a crap, this thread can also be for discussion of Shenmue 1 and 2.
Personally I think Ryo looks very weird in what they have shown. I get it's still concept and we're 2 years or so from it being released but I just hope they sort it out. I also hope that Corey Marshall and all the other VA's return to voice the important characters. There is a side of me that wants Shenmue 3 to have bad voice acting like it did in 1 and 2, but for that to happen it might hurt the reviews of the game since it would be a factor that people would pick up on. I'd settle for the original VA's moreso than anything though.
Anyhow. If you guys are going to play Shenmue 1 and 2, look over some videos, some gameplay (and try to watch the HD ones recorded via NullDC) and see for yourselves if this is a game you'd like to play.
I never played these games because I never owned the Dreamcast, but I have seen them played. so I really want to see this game do as well as it can, although I don't think it'll get enough money to be the same caliber as the first two, so we'll probably get another Deep Silver Ala a Mighty Number 9 situation. I don't see that as a bad thing though, depending on who teams up with them. I'm hoping Square, That Game Company or Comcept, since they'll know what it's like to be in that situation.
Still thinking about getting Shenmue on Dreamcast. And I will. It's just expensive and I don't have that much time to play.

Emulate it or burn discs to be used directly on your Dreamcast. It's not difficult and the cheapest alternative. However you will need to invest time into the game, there are 3 discs for the first game and 4 on the second. Overall you'd need to spend like 50 hours or so on both games, depending on how you play and what you do.

Sony said that they would co-fund the game. The kickstarter was to see if there was interest, and it's currently idling at 2.9m and they only need 2m. Sony will most likely give them enough for what they want to do, plus the original team is working on it so they must want to do it out of love more than money.

Emulate? Burn? If I wanted to do that I wouldn't have bought a Dreamcast in the first place.

The majority of Dreamcast's can play burned discs. If you can't currently afford to play Shenmue no one would hate you for burning the discs and playing them.
I get you want to own the game to play them on the DC, but if you can't afford them just burn them. I did that for many games back in the day, I still have them around as well.

I know it can, and I know I can. But I didn't pay good money for a Dreamcast to not have the original games.

Alright man, it's your choice. I'm just saying. You have about 2 years to play through Shenmue 1 and 2 before 3 comes out. You have enough time to be able to buy the originals for the Dreamcast and go from there.
You should also note that Shenmue 2 was not released in the NTSC area, so you'd need a PAL console to play 2 or use an Xbox since that got Shenmue 2.
Is Sony actually working with them? I thought they were just helping them introduce it. Oh well, I'll take it if it's true.
Excuse the Kotaku link, but here is a source.

Quote:"With Shenmue III, the rest of the money seems to be coming from Sony. How much? No idea."
Also, I had to change a spelling error in that quote, God damn Kotaku.

It has taken me 15 years to even consider playing the first one, I think I can live if I can't play Shenmue 3 on release date :D
Also, no Xbox. Never had one. Oh, and I live in Europe so PAL's not a problem. Especially when I happen to have a modded console :P A modded console is a necessity for Dreamcast collecting anyway, since the release regions of a lot of the games vary quite a bit.
It seems people don't like them doing a kickstarter to gague interest for the game.
However, it makes a little sense. It's not a pre-order where the game is almost finished but more of a pre-order that tells the consumer to put up or shut up.
Using surveys are nice and all but it doesn't mean that they will buy the game upon release.

Hey man, as long as you play it, that's cool with me.
Also, you should get an original Xbox and mod it. The OG Xbox was actually really good, had tons of exclusives, the best multiplats that weren't on PC and you can emulate older titles I believe from PS1/N64 down if you ever wanted to. They're cheap as well so it's not even a lot of effort to buy one and have.

Yeah, they think that the funding of Shenmue is stupid since Sony are funding it anyway but the whole reason Sony ARE funding it is because they know there is demand for it. It's a good way to see if people want the game.
The good news is that Sony have a "list" of games that they would consider making. This is really good as they're basically saying they will focus on niche games that have a lot of demand but no one will make them. Here's hoping for Skies of Arcadia and God Hand to be on that list.

The reason I have a ton of consoles but not a single Xbox is literally just that, no exclusives that interest me.
So you're saying that Jet Set Radio Future, Phantom Crash, Phantom Dust, Quantum Redshift, Ninja Gaiden, Ninja Gaiden Black, Blinx The Time Sweeper, Blinx 2: Masters of Time and Space, Breakdown, Dead or Alive 3, Dead or Alive Ultimate, GunValkyrie, Deathrow, Far Cry Instincts, Fuzion Frenzy, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Forza, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes, MechAssault, MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf, Metal Wolf Chaos (Sadly a Japanese exclusive), Otogi: Myth of Demons, Steel Battalion, Steel Battalion: Line of Contact, ToeJam & Earl III: Mission to Earth, Xyanide, Sudeki and Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dawn of Destiny don't interest you?
Damn man, I just don't know anymore.
