You took said joke and basically said it was stupid.

Uh...no. I just explained the "las maldivas son argentinas" joke since he clearly say that he didn't get it.

We ALL got it the first time.  Your explanation wasn't actually needed as honestly just came across as rude.
I'm sorry that it is hard to get the true meaning behind stuff we say sometimes, but to come out and ask "Why does this have more upvotes" was very rude in of itself, and your explanation wasn't needed.  He had said it would be funnier if it said something else, not that he didn't understand the original joke.  So... yeah.  It was still a bit of a rude move.
