Only previously arrested for petty crimes. Goes to show that you don't have to be on the radar to commit atrocities. That said, I'm pretty sure they won't tell us for a while if he was being tracked.

A coup d'etat in all its glory. Not surpised. Well yeah a little. The president is not that great since he wants to transform Turkey in a more conservative country, more religious, etc.

Simply put, Erdogan wants to push more towards radicalism, but the army supports Ataturk's origins, vision for a secular Turkey. Cue coup.

I keep seeing people claiming the coup in Turkey was staged to a degree. I'm not sure how valid that claim is, but there's been a lot of crackdowns since it happened, and its kind of scary.
