The GTA games are like Final Fantasy. They keep the same mechanics and references but you can join in whenever you want and not feel like you need to play the others to experience the series as a whole. Do you need to play GTAIV? I think it's a great game that's well worth playing if you aren't focused on any other games but if you join in on the GTAV train, you haven't missed anything.
