I thought that was sudden, and this makes a lot more sense. Miyazaki himself said on several different occasions during interviews that he wanted someone to replace him the event of his retirement, not that the company instantly shut down.
I do hope we get some good news, because after a film like "Up on Poppy Hill" which I really enjoyed, it would be sad to see Miyazaki's son not try again for the company to bring more fans to his side and then let him run with it for awhile.
