If you know Metroid like I do, you would know that Metroid is not a money maker and Nintendo really does not like that, to the point that they really don't want to make a game for it any more (which is why the last few games have been out sourced to different studios). Even the much beloved and "perfect in every way" Super Metriod did not sell as much as you would expect. So it really does not surprise me that Nintendo would ask them to drop the new Metriod for a Mario/Luigi game, which they know the fan boys would eat up like hot cakes.
