This direct can directly fuck off. A good percentage of people said they were mad at Nintendo over their stubbornness to focus on almost nothing outside of Smash at E3, and there are dozens of other games they desperately need to talk about, and instead they focus on the game that several people are already sold on or are sick of seeing. I want to see them talk about Bayo 3, Metroid 4, Persona Q2, an Animal Crossing game for Switch, really pretty much anything besides Smash. At this point, it's going to be extremely difficult to talk about anything new for the game since they spent most of their E3 direct with it, and most of Nintendo Treehouse Live with it. Nintendo needs to shift their focus away from Smash to any of their other projects, because the people who are going to buy this game are already there, and it's gonna be hard to get new people into the game, but easy to deter people like me from it because I'm sick of it being everywhere around Nintendo. Iwata-san always made it a point to talk about a lot of different things to keep consumer interest up, but the current Nintendo has completely abandoned that for no reason.
Ultimate is Nintendo's biggest game this holiday. (Other than Pokémon Let's GO!, though I don't see there being that much left to talk about concerning it.) And a Smash-focused direct would have happened eventually, so at least be glad there getting it out of the way first.
And even if they did do a regular direct right now, they wouldn't really talk about much. We already know there are some games we don't know about coming this Fall, but I doubt they would be very big titles. (Though they'd likely take a good while explaining them.) Plus, they would likely fully explain the online service, and all the smaller indie stuff the like to focus on. What I'm saying is it wouldn't be nearly as exciting as people would hope. (Especially if they go in expecting games that have no release window/haven't even been announced.)
And for Ultimate "not having much more to talk about". We no nothing about this game in terms of modes alone. Not to mention new characters, new/returning stages, how online will work, trophies, extras, etc. There's a ton to be expanded on, so it's not a purposeless direct.
I disagree with pretty much all of this. I'm not asking for new IP's or sequel's directly (though I know a lot of people who like Animal Crossing so for their sake it would be nice to see) but I've seen so much of Smash Bros already, that I would prefer anything that's left is left to be be found out by players so there are at least some surprises. What I am asking for, more than anything else, is updates to games that were already announced like Luigi's Mansion, Yo-kai Watch Blasters and other titles I already mentioned. Also, Nintendo giving some insight as to what's happening at the early going for next year would be nice since so little is left for this year that more than a few fans are going to care about outside of Smash. As for new characters, there won't be many as was made clear by Sakurai-san himself so I wouldn't be shocked to see no new characters announced this Wednesday. Whatever, the case may be with Smash, I'm done with it. I hate that Nintendo has taken this route every year since Iwata-san died, of focusing on one title so much that everything else feels insignificant, and this is the worst case of it so far. The hype for a game company can only go so long when they aren't marketing to all kinds of consumers they have the potential to appeal to, and this is a prime example of them not doing that. If anything, this direct, which was inevitable, should have happened in September, where Nintendo is going to lose out on sales to the major games that aren't going to be on their systems. It would have given people reason to talk about them during that month, and if they had already updated previously announced titles and kept other fans happy, more people would be receptive to a Smash focused direct. Doing things this way, people who felt Nintendo ignored what they cared about most, only end more frustrated with them. You're right about one thing though, Nintendo wouldn't likely have much to talk about that would interest a large number of people. They don't do that anymore, because they have no idea how to run the company without Iwata's guidance, that they threw out quicker than we all came to realize how serious his cancer was.
