I highly doubt that only the XL will be released outside of Japan. It's just that the XL tends to sell more and works better with Amiibo so since they are trying to hype the Amiibo, it makes sense that they'd want the easier to use Amiibo device out first. I'd be willng to bet before E3, or right at E3 the regular version will be be released.
I know. That was my only gripe with the Direct Because either I say screw it and make due with XL or patiently wait on a system that may take way too long for release.
