Today marks the 10th anniversary of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

The original Iron Man movie (the one that kickstarterd the MCU) was released on this exact date 10 years go.

Spent my last weekend binging movies from one of my newfound favorite director Taika Waititi. I initially knew nothing of him til i discovered the he was one that directed Thor Ragnarok. Loved his sense of humor and decided to watch his films from what i could find. and now a list because why not.

EAGLE v. SHARK

 Despite the title, the movie has nothing to do with Eagles and Sharks duking it out. This is the first movie he directed and it plays like a lowbrow Wes Anderson film. Now, there are genuine funny moments in the movie,  but it is more drama than comedy. I liked it quite a lot but it is not something that I would watch any time soon. The two main character (Jemaine Clement and Loren Horsley) have really good chemistry and they are what makes this movie. However, the film doesnt balance out the humor and drama and there is quite a lot to invest because while the main characters are good, they can come across as very unlikable.

BOY

And now were getting into the good stuff. This movie is such a sweet and great comedy that really hones in the directing prowess of Taika Waititi. It basically deals with the relationship of a Kiwi boy named Boy (yea, i know) and his relationship with his manchild of a father(who is played by Taika Waititi). It is the most endearing film that I have seen and it doesn't have a moment where I couldn't help myself from laughing or be interested in. I also couldn't stop comparing my own life to the film and it really resonated feelings about my childhood.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople

A common theme that revolves around these films is the relationship of the main characters and how they heavily depend on one another. This movie is the epitome of that theme, as a rejected kiwi orphan and his adopted stepuncle are on the run from the authorities because of extremely complicated reasons. It really shows the beauty of New Zealand and the comedy is really on par with Boy.

This is a mocumentary about Vampire frats living it out in the country of New Zealand. There isn't much I can say except just watch the freakig movie already

Thor Ragnarok

There isn't much I can say about Thor. I never liked him in the comics or the movie nor did I even bother watching the last two thor movies. Hell, the only reason why I even watch this one was because Hulk was in the movie. Had the green man in tights hadn't been in the movie, I wouldnt have watch Thor Ragnarok. As I can only comapare Thor to the Avenger movies, there is a great difference of characterization, in the sense that Thor is an actual character and not just a dude with a magical thunder hammer. I loved how Thor used humor as a self-defense mechanism and his friendship with Valkyrie and Hulk really showed how lonely he actually is. This is the only time where I actually become invested in Thor, especially with what happens at the end of the movie.

I initially wanted to put trailer videos but I found it better to watch movies with little to no knowledge( at least visual-wise). AND if you are going to watch the movies above, do have fun.

So yesterday I finished watching John Wayne's El Dorado. I also got to watch Bruce Lee's The Big Boss.

El Dorado: This one is complicated. I watched it once but life got in the way and stopped. A couple days later I watched it again starting from where I left and life got in the way again. The third time (yesterday) I found myself pressing the 'pause' button and doing something else a couple of times here and there do to lack of interest, but I still finished watching it because I wanted to get it over with. Basically, what I'm trying to say here is that being interrumped so many times hampered my enjoyment of the film.

This doesn't mean the movie itself is bad or anything. The cinematography was really well done. John Wayne and Robert Mitchum had some great chemistry, and the comedy helped to keep a somewaht warm atmosphere, especially after the first 20 minutes which were quire serious.

The Big Boss: The action is really well done, as expected from Bruce. Not only that but the main star remains almost inactive for the first half as Cheng must avoid violence due to his oath, which I must say is quite the bold move. The story was well developed, with good amounts of suspense and action. The natural and raw look of the film added to the high dose of graphic violence give the movie a harsh, gritty realism that adds to its charm.

Happy 10th anniversary to The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian!

So yesterday I finally got around and watched Zoolander 2.

Apart from that one I smiled I cracked, the movie simply failed to deliver. It was completely unfunny and unamusing, the vast majority of the jokes completely miss the mark. While it's true that I've watched some comedy films that didn't make me laugh, at least they kept me amused. Zoolander 2 was BORING. So boring in fact that I almost fell asleep while watching it!

The plot itself isn't any better, in fact, the plot is a mess that is escattered all over the place (sometimes they are looking for some assasins, other times they are just trying to do fashion, in others they are looking for Derek's son, etc).

On the bright side of things, the cinematography looks very stylish, just as the world of fashion should be. Some of the action sequences were fairly enterntaining as well.

I'll stick with the original 'Zoolander' film/10

That being said, its 90% the same kinda deal so recommended.

So yesterday I watched Michael Mann's Heat. 

The movie revolves aruond "couples", as in the sense of two people complimenting each other by fulfilling the voids of the partner. Lt. Vicent Hanna (Al Pacino) and bank-robber Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) complete each other in a rather strange way. One cannot exist without the other and both shared a strong bond in that they belong to a world nobody but them understands at it's fullest extent. It quite reminded me of the relationship Batman and The Joker.

Other than the chemistry between Mr. Pacino and De Niro, the rest of the cast did a great job on their own regard. The clever directing by Michael, where he switches between the many storylines quickly and effortlessly, but also logically and fluidly is worth a praise. Each scene leaves its own, unmistakable impression, and each scene of each storyline builds upon the previous.

Go see it if you haven't.

The cast of JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 has just added THE RAID stars Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman, as well as Tiger Hu Chen from Keanu Reeves' MAN OF TAI CHI as assassins set to square off against its titular character.

As someone who loved both films of The Raid as well as Man of Tai Chi, I must say that I already wanted to watch the John Wick movies before, but this? It just increases my urge to watch them even more!

I need to get around and watch John Wick 1 & 2 ASAP!!

Happy 10th anniversary to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull! (AKA Indiana Jones 4).

So today I watched this film called "Arlington Road".

The acting of the two main stars Jeff Bridges (As Michael Faraday) and Tim Robbins (as Oliver Lang) were spot on. The tension builds steadily throughout the course of the film. My only real complaint about this film is that sometimes it seems confused about it's identity: at time it feels like a study of one man's psyche but at other time it feels like a social commentary on the U.S as a nation.

Overall, it is a good thriller film about loss and paranoia.

Finished watching Terry Gilliam's Brazil(if anyone is wondering, I watched the final cut version of this film). I mostly knew about this movie because of what went on behind the scenes between Universal and Terry, and believe me it ain't a pretty picture. Setting that aside. I really didn't know what I was expecting. It was bizarre, there were a few things I liked about it(the acting for one thing is very well played out throughout this movie) and the scenery of perspectives. A lot of good perspective shots in this movie. Would I recommend it? Yes, but if you really want to get into this movie, I suggest you find the final cut version of the movie which has everything that was taken out for time purposes on Universal's behalf. 

Little bit of trivia about this movie. There's a nod to cartoonist Harvey Kurtzman(creator of 'Hey look!' and one of the original artists on the early days of Mad Magazine) in this movie.

Jamie Foxx Confirmed to Play Spawn in Todd McFarlane’s Reboot

My brother came up, so we rented two movies from RedBox for the weekend.

Winchester: Honestly better then I was expecting. For the most part, they did their research on the house. I was expecting it to be more on the build up to building the house, but having it be in the middle of it was still pretty good. Like a 6-7/10

Jigsaw: It's back to form. After Saw 3D, I wanted a follow up to the ending they had and was really good. Spoiler, but they don't really follow up on that. The plot of the movie is the mystery of who the new Jigsaw is, and after two movies that don't feel satisfying when you put the pieces together, this one did a great job with it. If you're not a fan of the series, it's not going to make you into one. A personal 7/10

Will Smith's Hancock is officially 10 years old.

So yesterday I finally got around and watched the original Tron movie. I also watched the second Tron movie for the first time in many years.

Tron: Needless to say, the movie was a landmark when it came to the visual department. It pushed the CGI of the era to it's limits and beyond, being the first film to use transparency in 3D CGI (the solar-sailor simulation). Some may critize the lack of texture mapping, but keep in mind this wasn't available in 1982 (correct me if I'm wrong), and besides, the lack of texture mapping works well with the stylized look of the film's "world inside the machine".      

Moving on from the visual department. The plot is lacking in some areas. You can tell this by the sheer amount of ideas they wanted to introduce but were quickly dropped because they couldn't be expanded properly on an hour and half of film (the Grid bugs come to mind). Lastly, I must say Jeff Bridges did a great job as Kevin Flynn. He nailed it as the computer industry hotshot.

Tron: Legacy (aka Tron 2): The acting was good, but definetly not award worthy. The visual effects worked pretty well. I liked the updated designs of the light cycles and other artifacts. The musical score was spot on. A solid sequel overall.

Also, I recently found out that a third Tron called Tron: Ascenion was on the works before it got cancelled due to low box office sales of Tomorrowland. The only thing I can say is “that sucks”. Tron could have worked as a trilogy.
