Popo of Ice Climbers and Smash Bros fame is named Pepe in Germany. This seems to be because Popo means buttocks (or simply 'butt') in German. Germany is known for massively censoring video games, so this should come as no surprise.
The character is definitely named Pepe in Germany, which can be seen in many publications. One example is the German hub for Wikipedia https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_Climber
Here's a screenshot I took of the European version of Melee running the German language setting:
I also checked to see if Popo had his name changed in any of the other EU languages, but they were all Popo.
