Have Video Games ever helped you in real life/taught you anything?
#1
For me, playing games like Pokémon helped me to read, especially when I was young. I'd usually ask my mother if I didn't understand a word and that helped. I still remember asking her what "Crisis" meant after you help the head of Devon Corporation has to run since he has a "Crisis" on his hands. In a similar manner, playing games in general helped to improve my vocabulary at a young age for better or for worse.

Of course, random tidbits of information as well. Such as Albion being one of the oldest names for Great Britain thanks to Fable, even though they will be no use but weapon names/attachments/magazine's/ammo and other assortment of weapons.

Also, according to an American friend I play with online, I can imitate an American accent very well, mostly due to playing with Americans throughout my teenage years on Xbox Live. So that's always something.

How about you guys, or have Video Games just been a massive time sink for you?

I have friends who learned English through video games, and when I was younger, I would turn on subtitles and use video games to help me better understand how to read.

I also learned a lot of Australian slang from Ty the Tasmanian Tiger.

Shit man, I basically didn't have to study until 10th grade for english and history classes because of the games I played.

I've learned a few things from games, surprisingly, one of those useful bits of info came from Mega Man Legends 2 wherein after you beat a boss he warns Mega Man "Work on your skill, not your speed, because your speed, won't last." That has proven to be very true for me as I work a physical job.

Here's one I figure we've all got. Games ended up bringing me to DYKG and inadvertently here.

Starcraft sparked my love for sci-fi.

I guess I got a lot of friends out of just playing games. Going to local arcades and fighting game sessions resulted in meeting a lot of great people who I now talk to on a daily basis.

Some games like Soul Reaver encouraged me to write stories when I was younger and also use the "big fancy words" like that game.

When we started to learn english in school I was the worst in class and even had trouble with a few basic things. Until I started to play video games in english and watch english let's plays. Suddenly it was fun to learn! I then improved my abilities over the years and eventually I was the best in class. Haha. So, without video games I probably couldn't even write this, and to this day I continue to expand my vocabulary when I stumble upon words I don't now.

I got a few. So i'll list them.

Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana- Showed my interest for the fantasy elements that could be explored with in video games. As well as having clever ideas that may have seemed impossible at the time. I ended up finding a lot of interesting things in the fantasy genre thanks to these two games.

Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario(and thousand year door)- These three mario games are different from other RPG games that i've played. Not only did they take something iconic like mario, they introduced him into a new form of gameplay that they didn't think it would work. In the end it did.It taught me if you play your cards right with original things, you can get places(sadly that can't be said for the later Paper Mario games with the exception of Paper Jam). Plus I learned how to be patient with timing and learn how to read better with Super Mario RPG.

Um Jammer Lammy and Parappa the rapper showed me that music is one of the main things to focus on when it comes to making a video game.

Learned a bunch of weird vocabulary from Runescape when I was nine.

Dragon Quest 9 helped me not to blow my fucking brains out when I was forced into a horrible, horribly middle school play.

also this is unrelated but seriously wtf is up with that girl's hair on the left of the forum background? Damn that looks uncomfortable, like I get wanting to tie your hair back for a fighting tournament but fucking cornrows? Really? It's not even full cornrows, that other half is gonna be even more in your face, you're just hurting yourself for no reason dummy.

Doesn't help that she has the same electrical powers as Blanka. Imagine her bad hair days.
