Nothing yet has been confirmed on how long Breath of the Wild had been in development for, but I'll guess it was probably after Skyward Sword was completed, but I know it was being done for a Majority of the Wii U's Life Cycle.
Since the Wii U's reveal at E3 2011, Zelda games were considered, including HD Remakes. As for a new one that's been due to have so much great features, Aonuma spoke about in the Nintendo Direct in January 2013 during about the last 7 minutes of it, stating it would be a while before the game releases:
First Screens at E3 2014, announcing a 2015 Release Date, which remained the goal for nearly a year, even at the 2014 Game Awards:
Aonuma announces that they wish to Expand the World as possible with more Ideas coming into mind, with it no longer aiming for a 2015 Release, instead aiming for the year after:
It was then announced to be Delayed again to 2017 so it would release simultaneously on both the Wii U and the Switch: https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2016/160427_4e.pdf
Indeed it did release as a Launch Game for the Switch, as strongly believed.
Does anyone think this about Breath of the Wild going through Development Hell might make a Good Trivia Submission someday?
