Bethesda is BS
#1
You'll excuse my profanity I hope, but I'm seriously pissed and it's time someone called Bethesda out for the crap company they are.

Many remember that back in 2015, Bethesda tried to make paid mods, and everyone spoke out against them because of how bad an idea it was. The very concept of a company trying to monetize patches for broken and buggy games, which Bethesda is famous for as well as trying to make anything that could be made for free by passionate fans set the community on fire to tell them no. Ultimately, it was a success, Bethesda had to back down from a practice that no one wanted to have, but that didn't stop them from trying to re-brand it to they could try to take a piece of that modding pie.

Enter 2017, and at E3 they announced the "Creation Club" an idea where credits can be purchased to buy mods that can only be found in the creation club's store. This included the idea of extra dungeons or extended areas to play in and all sorts of wonderful ideas that would only cost a little bit for fans, but Bethesda being what I've been calling them out for, for years, decided that was too complex as of the launch of creation club, and put up a list of items that are mostly already available in game and at a lower quality then what's already out there.
Sounds fun right, but it only gets worse. The credits I briefly mentioned, guess what happens with them, they cost real money, and the less you buy at a time, the more they cost per dollar. The credits can be purchased with as little as $7.99 for 750 or as much $39.99 for 5500 credits. A Youtuber named YoungYea, did the math and found out that if you buy credits at $7.99 it costs $1.07 for 100 credits, and if you buy the $39.99 pack it costs $0.73 for 100 credits. The items available are bits of armor, new colors for the pip boy, decorations for house building, and weapons, and as I said before, a lot of these items are already available for free, but now you are expected to pay for the lower quality Bethesda versions, and because these items go through Bethesda's development team, you run the risk of them being buggy. Now some of these items are new, but most are not and again can be put into the game Fallout 4, which is the only game with creation club mods thus far that I'm aware of, for free.

It's also worth mentioning that these mods are currently being treated as on disc DLC because as soon as you patch any Bethesda title, they will be uploaded on to your computer, and take up space. For now that space is a mere 600 Megabytes or so, but a year or two down the road if this issue persists, you could be looking at several gigs of your hard drive space, being taken up by things, you may not have access to because you didn't pay to get them. Hopefully Bethesda will at least sort out this issue, but considering all that's been going on with them, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't.

Now obviously, all of this is pretty much bullshit, but it's not just Bethesda's fault, it's their goddamn stupid blind fans fault as well, possibly even more so. I will give credit where it's due, they did speak out against paid mods, but these fucking idiots kept letting them make games with cheap cash-in DLC without complaining. They defended Bethesda when they would release products, clearly not ready to be out in the market, while attacking others for doing the same thing, and they've been ignoring people like myself who have been calling them and Bethesda out for their bullshit. Bethesda has been given a free pass to feel like Gods of the industry because of blind fanboyism, and look where we are now. They've bullied smaller companies into giving them IP's instead of buying them hence Prey, they forced an indie company to change the name of their game because it had the word "Prey" in it, even though that's where the similarities end, and now they are trying to force people to pay for content that is otherwise free. And why did it all happen? Because stupid fucking people who send mix signals gave them the idea that this shit was okay. They had them convinced that they were a company that could do whatever they wanted, hell even after 2015 they treated them like Gods yet again as though nothing would happen or had happened. I wonder if the people who would blindly defend them realize that if the creation club is successful that other companies will do the same thing and again the industry will have the power to take more away from consumers in what might be the most anti-consumer practice we've ever seen. Thanks Bethesda's blind for backing us all into a corner we may never get out of. Listen to people sometimes, and thanks to all of you who didn't call Bethesda out on their shady practices until it was too late. So if you supported them through all of their crap, thanks, you just risked making the industry worse.

I'm gonna miss Fallout 4. Its not worth updating F4SE every week and doing workarounds to prevent updates. It was like a less dude-bro Far Cry 3. At least New Vegas is still there for me.

Any Bethesda title that gets mods in creation corner will do the same thing if they don't correct so I suggest for a while that you check that to make sure nothing else you like by them get messed up like this.

Only other game I own that's affected by this mess is Skyrim Special Edition, but my excitement for that game ended pretty soon after I finished modding it and remembered I find Skyrim to be boring and sponge-y.

Grain of salt time but rumors suggest that Bethesda isn't paying people well for the mods they are putting up in creation corner :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc2OLgP-AFM

It only gets worse. As that video I posted a few days ago was more a rumor video, I didn't take anything in it at face value, just in off chance something wasn't accurate, but at the early part of the video, itsagundam mentions the limit of records (I think he said forms, I don't remember) that the format has, and today with some research, it seems like he was pretty on point with that, at least according to YoungYea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xts8UzBk0wM

A few issues have been addressed regarding the creation club, but only a few: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXBy5cTAALk&t=0s

What's good to know is that no longer will PC versions of Fallout 4 or Skyrim be forced to download all the files regarding creation club content. Bethesda also said they are working on a fix for that for console versions, which is great and fiar enough, but then question remains, why was that part of creation club in the first place? There's something to be said about releasing content in such a way that it's basically on disk DLC, and that issue should have been ironed out before creation club was even launched, unless of course they thought that no one would mind because it's Bethesda which is inexcusable. They also addressed a bug where the files would show up at random orders and are working to fix it.

What they did not do was still give us a clear reason to give a damn about anything in creation club currently. They claim they are not restricting creation club content to .esl files which if you remember were restricted to 4096 records. They will also use .esm files since .esp files would turn off achievements, but what bothers me all the same here and YoungYea says it in the video I linked, is how much would they charge for these larger expansions or mini dlc's when the current power armor that costs 500 credits or about $3.65-$5.35 U.S. currency depending on which set of credits you purchase. Imagine a mini dlc that lasts about as long the Atamatron dlc that was only a few hours long costing about 2000 credits as an estimate. At the cheapest that expansion would cost $14.60 and the most expensive would be $21.40 U.S. currency. That is just an estimate and I think is pretty generous considering how much they are charging for just a suit of armor.

When it comes to why we should treat Creation Club as different than free mods, Bethesda refused to change their tone about that, reiterating their statement, albeit more wordy than before, about how it goes through their process of testing and all of that, completely missing the major complaint people have against the creation club. Also their defense of using old content from other games is laughable at best since they seem to refuse to comment on their statement off the official creation club website about all content being new. It's also safe to say we'll see more content of a similar nature since they seem to have no problem with it and are intending to release new content to creation club monthly, which may or may not cause more complaints as time goes on.

Overall, they've done one thing right that I can tell. The bug about things appearing out of order feels to me like something to mention simply to make it seem like they are working on more than they are. It's a bug, you'll fix it, we get it, it's what you do, fix your buggy games. It's also nice to see they are fixing the whole thing about an update downloading all of the current creation club content, but again this shouldn't have been an issue in the first place. Bethesda has dug themselves into a large hole, and as far as I'm concerned, they still have a long way to go to dig themselves out.

I'll tell ya this much. I bet the main reason they fixed the entirety of the creation club being on file for everyone was that its been demonstrated to be very simple to simply reformat the files and put them in the game without buying them. I would never condone the practice, but I read plenty of people on /r/fallout /r/fo4 and /r/falloutmods trying it out.

New Creation club content seems to be just as bad, if more worse than before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJ8HZxyrDWY

Basically what's going on here is that Bethesda is sticking some Doom related content on Fallout 4 with the original armor shown on the cover of the first Doom, and the BFG, which each cost 400 credits. Of course that means if you want both items, you can't buy the $7.99 credits package it only gives you 750 credits, which means the best option is to buy the 1500 credits package for $14.99 because paying $7.99 twice is a dollar more expensive. Skyrim is also getting DLC, but they are charging for a survival mode that will cost 500 credits, even though that same mode was free in Fallout 4. These microtransaction choices clearly and definitively fall into the same thing you can expect of free to play games, and Bethesda doesn't seem to care.

I don't want more Skyrim, Where the fuck is Redguard?

Thats how I feel about it. Sure they have some shady practices, but like, they aren't as bad as Konami, and I can guarantee there is a bunch of stuff you don't know about Konami being a terrible company.

Saying one company is worse than another does not excuse the lesser evil for lack of a better term, not at all. Even more so because as far as I know, Konami is only a problem to current and former employees, although good luck with them trying to screw with people who Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft tell them to back off from. Konami does not have that much weight to throw around anymore. Bethesda on the other hand does, and they use it to bully smaller companies out of their IP's so far as we know because they won't comment on it, which is all kinds of shady, and we know for a fact they'll bully an indie company into changing their game's name despite being obviously different. When you start taking your bad habits and forcing them on other people it's hard to argue that they can be excused because someone did something worse.
