All the American cannon back stories are wrong. IIRC the one considered cannon and being used today is the one found in the Japanese Sonic 1 manual.

The only group of people who consider the promotional comic true cannon are American Sonic elitists.

This origin was also used in a kids' book here in the US if I'm remembering correctly, along with the story that Sonic and Robotnik were both raised by Uncle Chuck before Robotnik decided to take over the world.
