I've only ever played one April Fools prank. I took a hard boiled egg, covered it with chocolate, and placed it in a Cadbury Egg wrapper. I gave it to one of my friends, whom I felt had the best sense of humor, but his slew of curse words after made it obvious I may have chosen a prank that was a tad too gross.

I still think it would've been funny if, whatever folks who have the highest enough rank to do so, (could Mods do this? ) would've changed everyone's avatars to something silly as a joke.

UPDATE:

A few minutes later I hear a scuffle.
Then a flush.
The door flies open- "CHELSEA!" It was my brother.
"Yes?"
"Did you put that novelty toilet paper in the bathroom?"
"Yes. Did it work?!"
"Yes. It was very unpleasant. Haha. (<--sarcastically) I'm throwing it away."
A few minutes later I went in, dug it out of the trash, and replaced it :)

That's pure genius. I've never heard of that one! I have heard of putting a stick through an onion, covering the onion in caramel, and it looks EXACTLY like a caramel apple.
