Getting all 120 Shine Sprites in Mario Sunshine. I would argue most of the "Stars" in 3D Mario are not worth it, but Mario 64 is easy enough to complete and Mario Galixey 1 is fun to the point that I don't care. Sunshine on the other hand, is not easy. It places normal Shine Sprites in easy enough places to get, but you mix in 100 coin Shines that you can only get in maybe one episode of each level, the second secret sprite the game never tells you about (if I remember correctly), and the blue coins that are sometimes harder to find then the 100 coin sprites, not to forget about The Pachinko Shine and The Poison River Shine.
At lest the Yoshi cameo was a "Nice Job, Player." This just sucks.

The Magic Armor from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
First of all, you have to donate 1,000 Rupees to Gor Ebizo in the Malo Mart in Kakariko Village. Then, Malo asks for a new donation in order to expand his franchise and buy the shop in Hyrule Castle Town. It is either 2,000 Rupees or 200 Rupees if Link aids Gor Liggs' Son by bringing him Hot Spring Water. Once Link has donated enough money to help the cause, Malo promptly buys out Chudley and converts the Hyrule Castle Town shop into one of his Malo Mart branches. THEN you have to purchase the armor for 598 Rupees and guess what? The armor works on RUPEES.
Like, you have to spent 1798 Rupees (or 3598 if you don't aid Gor Liggs' Son) in order to get that armor, and you have to spent MORE Rupees in order to use it? Screw you, Eiji Aonuma.

I would like to explain why, but the PeanutButterGamer already did that in a way that...well, see it by yourself (star watching at 9:33):
( video here but not watching it)
Amen to that. I didn't watch the video, but I assume my reaction was probably much like his. I was so disappointed.

I decide to remove the video and make my very own explanation.

The Burrow Beast in Destroy All Humans 2 would probably count. Its a great weapon, and its basically a death sentence when you use it, but you get it after beating the game when there is literally nothing to do but attack hippies.

Cane of Byrna. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
I cannot even remember how to obtain this item, but it is completely useless to me.

I think you needed to go into a cave in the dark world under the dark mountain area. If my memory is correct, this item was mostly used to block attacks from certain enemies.

Back when I was a kid, I somehow obtained every single item in LTTP, and actually completed all the dungeons without a guide besides the last one.
I actually got as far as having 18 hearts, and the highest sword and shield. I never actually completed the game as a kid because it was impossible for me to time the magical bursts from the fire rod to light the flames.
I completed it now though.

The best I ever did, when I was a kid, is obtain every item and 19 3/4 hearts; I didn't have a guide and never obtained that last piece of heart to have 20 hearts.
I also found out I could get the Hammer in Dark World dungeon 1, defeated Dark World dungeon 4, got the Master Sword tempered, and then went back and had an easier time defeating Dark World dungeons 1-3; although the gameplay is rather linear, I enjoy knowing that I can play that out of order.

How about the general one of collecting all items/chests in any game with a finite amount in at least recent history. The most you get out of that is an achievement or trophy or whatever in most cases, and some items can be really hard to get for no reason.
