es·cutch·eon
iˈskəCHən/
noun
noun: escutcheon; plural noun: escutcheons; noun: escutcheon plate; plural noun: escutcheon plates

   1.
a shield or emblem bearing a coat of arms.
   2.
a flat piece of metal for protection and often ornamentation, around a keyhole, door handle, or light switch.

We still commonly use that word in French (écusson) to mean a heraldic shield or a badge (like the sow-on flag-badges they have on military uniforms !
