I guess Two Best Friends/Game Grumps could be considered let's players, but that's semantics. Mainly watch it for the commentary. In cases of people who do blind let's plays, I'd rather play the game myself.

The definition most LPers go by is "Someone who talks over a video game" or as Slowbeef put it "Have you ever seen a DVD, you know, how they do director's commentary and stuff? Well, imagine if some jackass who was not involved with the creation of the movie at all decided to just comment on what he thought watching the movie would be like."

As much as they want to distance themselves from Let's players (I hate the name too), the Game Grumps are borderline LPers.

Also, most people who play a game blind (like most of what the Game Grumps do) bother me. That and people who ignore instructions because they could not careless (Darksyde Phil) or are talking to each other too much (the Game Grumps and the Runaway guys at times) are the things that turn me off from videos most of the time.

-Most of the Normal Boots crew
-The classic AVGN stuff.
-Two Best Friends Play. Streetwise was probably the first one that got me hooked, aside from their Machinima stuff. Really like their podcasts as well.
-By proxy, there's also Plague of Gripes.
-Bro Team
-Caddicarus
-Criken
-Most of Mega64 (Garrett's the best)
-Helix Snake (guy who does a buttload of Skate videos about glitches, as well as other games)
-Used to watch The Best Gamers/Loud House, but they split off a long time ago. They almost had a show on adult swim at some point. RC64 is probably the one person who still does anything.
-motdef has some great stuff.
-MrBTongue has some great videos.
-Dunky, if it isn't about LoL.
-ZanMan. Didn't know he came up to Alaska a few times in the past for the Forest fair.
-Spike and Barley

Also a good number of guys who come from /v/ and do some pretty good stuff;
-HyperBitHero
-Instig8iveJournalism
-Matthewmatosis
-That TrainWiz fellow, who's done quite a few mods for Skyrim and Morrowind. Even some train-themed stuff. Also knows his TES lore pretty damn good.

I don't really use Youtube as a means to find other gaming stuff or LPs,, but if you really want a great example of an excellent 'Let's Play' then Research Indicates's Trespasser LP is in my opinion is one of the best LPs you may ever see. Granted if you watch for the personality then no, it's not.

For someone that still post content, SuperGreatFriend did a great LP of Deadly Premonition, demos various games from XLBIG so you don't have to, and does numerous streams including McDickie's Wrestling Revolution which birthed a long running gag character for more goofy games to come.

Lastly, ritcheyz is doing a 'Soul Level 1' playthrough of Dark Souls and shows off lots of stuff that I never thought was possible; not to mention it's also funny.

I'm going slightly off topic here, so I'll apologize in advance, but remember when text LPs were a thing?

Well, unfortunately the Phoenix Drive one is gone, but this is the only other one worth reading: http://lparchive.org/Princess-Maker-2/

I promise you it's hilarious and would have never worked as a video LP.

They're still are a thing though nowadays with the rise of the Youtube LPer, nobody really talks about SSLPs anymore unless you happen to post on a forum dedicated to Let's Plays.

I preffer video LPs and I'm trying to model myself (with my planed upcoming LPs, not the ones I have up now) on ProtonJon on Nakateleeli.

When I do read text LPs, they read more like strategy guides.

Indeed. Again, it's a case by case basis. As much as DSP is a complete moron, it's far FAAAR to unfunny to pass up on some of his antics; the 'This is how you don't play' series is comedy gold. Other cases like multiplayer sessions (Maxmillion Dood, Mike Ross and Gootecks Excellent Adventures) gain a lot more value to their videos with commentary because of their knowledge and it adds to experience but since it's not a game with a story nothing is lost form the game itself. If not that, then it's funny as heck.
I never actually watch a playthrough of a game, I usually have it on the background of if I want to fall asleep in bed without watching a TV show.
As I'm too lazy to post I am subscribed to a few people who, I doubt, anyone knows what they look/sound like since they upload directly (MasterLL or OmagEvolution) for example. Too many to name but it's a very diverse scene.

Also, what's the point of Liam and Ross in TBFP and GG?

I'm starting to get that way with his early stuff. It sounds like he has no idea what he's talking about, instead just going "Shit shit ass fuck, this sucks." He still does the same thing, but he sounds more professorial, trying to tell you about the game.

Personally, I think his big rigs review is his best one yet.

Say, do you guys prefer dual/multi commentary or just solo?

I ask because I tend to not like anything other than solo content except in some rare occasions. Those exceptions for me would be Little & Cubed, Chip & Ironicus, PeliMuruset and Laeppavika. The last is more of the multi commentary stuff and propably the only one I like that does that. I do also enjoy James & Mike Play and Screwattack's Hey! Let's Play! Propably worth noting is that out of all of those, only two are actual channels focusing on having more people talking at a time. It really does take a good pairing of people I preferably already know to make it work for me. Still, even though I like Arin, I can't watch stuff like GameGrumps.

I've seen a couple of you mention people like GameGrumps etc but I'd like to hear more of your thoughts on this.

Personally I prefer dual commentary because they have conversations and I most of the time like to watch for their commentary. I love Game Grumps because one Arin is my role model and two I love the conversations these two have. The Silent Hill Shattered Memories series was the best because they poked fun of the game and the game brought out more conversations. Now Wind Waker is the series I dislike a lot because they tend to be stuck and it makes Arin more focused (because if he doesn't people are going to bitch about it) leaving Dan to tell stories and start the conversations. Other than Game Grumps I watch Yo Videogames and Yuriofwind Let's Play. Yo Videogames tend to always play the games I want Game Grumps to play and I enjoy their talk based around games (they have a more better knowledge on games then Game Grumps). The only solo Let's Play I watch is Yuriofwind because he does it well. I've seen other solo let's players and they can be boring because of their lack of conversations but Yuriofwind is sarcastic and tends to mock any game he plays which makes it very entertaining. Other than those guys I really can't stand Let's Play because they could get very boring very quickly. It all depends on who plays the game.

Exactly. I've seen sooooooo many LPers who are either silent most of the time, say nothing interesting during the whole 50 part LP or just speak in a monotone voice like they hated what they're doing.

Conversely, I tend to not like watching many people play one game because they often tend to focus on pointless crap instead of the game itself or just mock it whether it was actually good or not because, hey, it's what the cool kids are doing. Of course, the latter is a problem with solo LPs too but more people playing the game tend to result in them laughing at pointless stuff while the viewer is kind of left outside.

This all makes me wonder how on earth I ever got even the 124 subscribers I have now in the first place.
