I want to be able to spearhead a new generation of technological progress, and to create and work with technology that people would both desire and need. Upon completion of this course, I believe I will have a better understanding computers and technology, and the fundamentals required to help position me within the workplace.
The A-Levels I studied throughout my sixth form have been important in enhancing the skills required for my chosen degree. ICT has taught me many ways in which to use different advanced programs, understand the inner workings of computers, and familiarise myself with the business side of the computing industry. My Economics classes has helped me to understand the financial impact of technology and how it has improved the economy through new jobs being created and improved GDP output, while History has assisted in my abilities to assimilate large volumes of information. Previously I wrote an EPQ that I presented about violence in video games, a controversial subject that I feel strongly about. This was received not only positively by my peers, but also throughout a number of users on many technology communities that I am a part of online. I researched many articles and studies about violent video games and compiled them together into a 5000 word essay and presentation. The EPQ has helped me to identify the problems that arose and what I did wrong, so that I can avoid them in future. It also helped me better understand the kind of research I will be expected to carry out at university.
Through these courses, I have obtained useful skills that will help me in University and in my chosen field of work. I work very efficiently in the tasks I am provided with, usually finishing them without help, being able to finish large pieces of work and writing in a timely manner. I excel in working independently and can rapidly grasp concepts, while also being acknowledge as a good team player, having been told in that past that I am not only a problem solver but also a good listener. I make it my obligation to keep up to date with knowledge of computing through frequently reading the latest research articles surrounding, but not limited to, how video games are created, the basics behind programming and the basics behind computer science at universities, along with coding languages such as C++. I understand that computer science is a lengthy course at university level and requires a critical and focused mind to be able to keep up with the information, workload and reading.
Outside of the classroom I have looked at how technology in different countries has failed to become successful and the reasoning behind these failures from a business standpoint. I have also familiarised myself with the different types of tasks video game development would undertake, whether through coding in the traditional field of games development, or other means of work in the industry. A beneficial lecture that I attended some time ago was on how technology and the internet were harnessed to make the 2008 US presidential campaign a success. This talk helped to show me how technology has become a very core part of our lives, and how it can be used to make tasks become not only more efficient on people's time, but also to ensure more accurate readings with little room for human error. I also spend my time regularly listening to radio broadcasts about the gaming industry, discussions of how technology has changed the world in recent years and a number of computer science related features.
I find tremendous enjoyment in both playing and researching video games, using this research to help teach others of interesting information that I find. I keep up to date with the latest news within the field and have also created add-ons for a number of different video games. Another passion of mine is drawing, which I practice within my spare time. My artistic abilities have also been known to be spent on playing various musical instruments throughout my life. Regularly I am known to spend my time cycling, reading, as well as cooking. I am commended on my ability to cook a fantastic curry. Another subject I have a keen interest in reading and researching various world wars.
