I wouldn't call it a huge disappointment. It is what people asked for. A Banjo-Kazooie game, made by the people who made Banjo-Kazooie, that feels like a Banjo-Kazooie game with out any of Nut & Bolts. The problem that I personally found with the game is that it has all of the above without having much of the spirt that made B-K good. It's really wants to follow in the footsteps of what made it great without knowing what made it great.
Let's make a protagonist that is a totle bitch because that was part of Kazooie's charm. Let's have tons of collectibles scattered everywhere because that's what we did for four N64 games. Let's reference that we're in a game ALL THE TIME because that's what we did sometimes with some of our games. Don't get me wrong, the Rare team is still in this game and the humor is still partly intact (I got a laugh at Yooka and Laylee's ship house being called Bat Ship Insane), but the they know who is going to buy the game and packed in so many refrancal humor got kinda old.
I started out actively hunting for criticisms when playing the game, and half way though the first level, I dropped the act and started enjoying myself. Then half way thorugh the second level, I started to want to play the old games. It's not like I wasn't having fun, but I knew I would have more fun either playing the older games or playing Shovel Knight. It also didn't help that Rextro (the "throw back" character to older technology) seemed to be a combination of how far we come since then and an insult to how bad they are compared to newer technology.
Last criticism, even if you give it as the last upgrade, an unlimited flying power in a 3D game is a bad idea. Yes the power bar slowly drains to make up for this but it slowly drains and fills back up automatically fills back up so it might as well not be there. I waited to Pagie hunt until I opened up every level since you need to upgrade each level once to get every Pagie and some Pagies need a later upgrade to get. Because I did this, I got 75% of Pagies pretty easily because all I had to do was fly to the place I needed to go.
With all that said, Huge disappointment? Not really, but if it was more focused on being a retro throw back to colectathons instead of being a Banjo-Kazooie clone, it would be so much better. Give it a chance if you're able to and maybe you'll have a different opinion then me.
P.S. I thought the same thing about Mighty #9. A good Mega Man 8 clone, just without much of the spirit. Makes me wonder how Bloodstained is going to be.
