I added a new rule. I hope it makes a difference, because sometimes it would take forever (at least for me) to load up a page because there was like a billion videos. If adding in the spoiler tags cuts down on that (the loading), then it's a good move.
And plus, if someone doesn't do it, a mod or admin can always just edit the post to add 'em in too.
Also, if someone doesn't like my wording of that rule (#6), they can fix it. It's late and I'm very tired.

Well I honestly thought the video was absurdly terrible to the point where it got flat out annoying, and since there's no way to rate posts or anything, I figured I'd just give him a quick -1. I wasn't "missing the point", I just thought he was being obnoxious in it.
Also, after the fact he messaged me saying:
Quote: Well, I can't please everyone, but it is my first ever film I made. Plus, it's a high school film, so It's not going to be Citizen Kane quality. But, ether way, thanks for your input. I can only get better.
Which I thought was cool of him, and I was even going to remove it, but then you guys flocked to him and gave him a ton of rep, rendering the whole system pointless. If you thought the fact that another user felt like giving him a -1 warranted balancing it out, then that's fine, and that's exactly what Berry did. But then you guys just decided to give him 10 more, because why not; And you were part of it, so don't tell me that I'm the one who missed the point 'boi

I'm going to ignore the 'boi comment and just respond to the important part. We didn't miss the point. We used your missing the point as an example. Was it overkill? Absolutely. But that was our decision to make. It turned into a joke, people had fun, and it's over.
You are perfectly entitled to your opinion but the proper way to express it would have been to provide constructive criticism. You can say you don't like it but explain why and maybe offer ways to improve. Saying "That sucked" and then giving a negative rep because you didn't like the video he posted really isn't in spirit of the rep system. That's all I'm saying on the subject though.

Personally not a fan of it myself, but seeing as it was on the other board, it's kind of tradition. I just don't want a member to feel very down or unwelcome if they get down voted and take it to heart. It might also cause a system in where I fear members might start fighting with "Well I have more rep then you, so I'm better and blah blah" and what not. That's just me though and this system is still new to me, so we shall see. As long as it doesn't cause some elitism among other members, I'll be fine with it.

I know what you mean and it's unfortunately what rep systems often degrade into. That's why we try to keep it more lighthearted and reserve down-voting for people who are actually doing something malicious.

Speaking of the whole upvote/downvote system.
Two sites that I use use it. One has both the upvote and downvote and the other only has the upvote. I like the only upvote option. Because sometimes people will just abuse the system and downvote everything because they don't like a person (happens to me) and it feels like it discourages them a bit.

We tend to use that as a last resort before disabling it completely if it gets too out of hand. As you saw earlier tonight though, we don't generally let baseless down-votes go unchecked.

I understand your concern, but we can definitely discuss the impact of piracy and such. Thank you, that makes much sense. I saw some guy get a rather lengthy ban on another forum because he posted a screenshot of a website or whatever and coincidentally in the shot was a utorrent popup saying that his Beatles discography download was complete... didn't want anything like that happening to me.
But you're Gabe Newell, you shouldn't have to worry about that stuff. You aren't a pirate, are you sir? That'd be all kinds of ironic wouldn't it?
Gabe Newell won't buy Half-Life 2 off Steam because it costs too much.

So..., what did I miss?

Is it OK to link to emulators (I'm assuming you can't link to actual official ROMs) and homebrew ROMs that were never commercial?

Nothing? Everything is still enabled for now. I was just speaking from past experience in reference to the rep system.

Emulators are perfectly legal and there should be no problem with posting them.
The gray area is the roms, not the programs used to play them.
edit- on that note, homebrew is legal too so go ahead

I would say keep both the upvote and downvoting system.
If someone gets enough downvotes it can go one of three ways.
1. They take it to heart and downvote everyone back and/or make a big stink about it.
2. They take it to heart and change themselves for the better, then they usually fall into option 3.
3. Nothing mappens and they go on with their life not caring about upvotes or downvotes.
People in the first option are not the nicest of people anyway, of which no one really wants to deal with that type of person. People in the second option usually bloom into fantastic people (Perfect example is Mighty Jetters from tSR. She turned around so good she even became a mod on that forum and generally loved by the community.) Finally, people in the 3rd option are people like me, Vipershark, and others who are generally just like "it's fun, but not something I need to worry about" type of thing because we know how to properly behave in a community with others and thus it isn't a big deal for us.

It's funny because I remember Arjahn down voting others and within the first hour of the forum being up, he's already at -2 XD
So good.

Updated rule #6.
Here are the rules again:
(03-16-2013, 10:15 PM)A Zombie Riot Wrote: (If one of the higher ups don't like this, get rid of it then, but I'm just posting this from the other forum)
1. No agressive attacks on other members. You will be banned if you make a personal attack on another member.
2. No excessive, pointless posting of memes or fads. Make sure your posts have a meaning or they will be deleted and you will be warned.
3. No NSFW images or linking. Posting porn or any kind of illegal material will result in a permanent ban.
4. No spamming of any kind.
5. Stay on topic in threads.
6. When posting videos, please put them in spoiler tags [spoiler][/*spoiler] (without the *) so when the page loads, it doesn't take forever for a page to load and it can go smoothly. This rule now is only in effect for posting multiple videos in a single post, or in a thread where videos are required (Example: The Music Thread). Otherwise, you do not have to use spoiler tags for videos.
And that's it. Have fun!
