This obviously doesn't reflect the quality of the game and is an entirely personal opinion.

The fact that popular games make up the most part of people's lists doesn't surprise me - popularity often goes hand in hand with overratedness.
Even a super-popular series won't please everyone, which leads to people believing that a game is overrated.

Exhibit A - SERIOUSLY tries Borederlands (pun inteded)

Friends - "Borderlands is so good !"
SERIOUSLY - "Hmmm, I'll probably enjoy this seeing as everyone seems to like it."
*SERIOUSLY plays Borderlands, but finds it boring after a while*
SERIOUSLY - "Grrrr this game isn't as good as everyone makes it out to be - it's overrated. I'm off to vent my spleen on VGF-Forums".

Of course. Otherwise it wouldn't be overrated games.

But just to mix things up, I'll post 5 games I LOVE, but post their shortcomings I often ignore.

1. Legend of Mana: the story is confusing at times, many of the characters are very underdeveloped, battles are fixed and cannot be skipped no matter how many times you fight them, and the way you walk in battle is remarkably slow (UNLESS you know how to work the awkward shimmying into twice as fast as walking).

2. Dynasty Warriors series: Obvious repetitive play style, stage layouts are usually pretty boring, and the voice acting is usually pretty bad.

3. VICE: Project Doom: an obvious Ninja Gaiden wannabe with cheesy dialogue.

4. Dark Souls: Online play makes the game obnoxiously hard at times when the differences in game experience greatly differs.

5. Kid Icarud Uprising: this might actually be popular, I don't actually know. The control scheme is fairly difficult when compared to a standard dual joystick style of controlling your aim.

The point I'm making is that you're going to see the same titles lined up from post to post. Heck, first couple of replies has COD somewhere in their posts. I just think this topic has been done to death to the point it becomes a chant.

1) Modern Warfare 3 - Story was good.... and that's about it. Multiplayer falls flat and isn't enjoyable in the slightest. In fact, it's like that with every Infinity Ward game.

2) Halo: Reach - I'm a big Halo fan. And I enjoy all the games... besides Halo: Reach. I went to the midnight release, was so hyped to play it, played it for a month and then just lost interest altogether. Gameplay was worse. The story wasn't even a story, because everyone should know that Reach falls (I mean, the book is even called "The Fall of Reach" for crying out loud).

3) Hitman: Blood Money - I enjoyed #2 and #3 a lot. Fun games. I was always told that Blood Money is the best game in the series, by far. So of course, when I actually tried to play it... it fell flat. Very very flat. Gameplay just wasn't on par. And that's a deal-breaker. A game can have a fantastic story, but the gameplay has to be good to be enjoyable. It's why I gave up playing Assault on Dark Athena. Oh, what a coincidence...

4) Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena - One of my best friends says that this game was the best stealth game he's ever played. And I take that on a high note because he hates stealth games (Doesn't hate stealth, just hates the games that are really focused on it). So... I get to play it and the gameplay was so bad.

5) Minecraft - I love this game. It's probably in my top 5 games of all time. But yet I can see exactly why it's overrated. If you're just playing it vanilla, it can become pretty boring pretty quick. Having to go mining for all the stuff you need. Being an adventurer. Dealing with creepers. But to me, that's what makes the game so fun. The exploring. Some people think that it's a game to see who can build the biggest stuff, or the best stuff. When it's clearly not like that. The game features a lot of... well, farming. And I don't mean that in the literal term (though you can actually be a farmer if you wanted to). And a lot of the time, that's extremely tedious and very boring. And I can see that as a turn-off for the game.

But playing on the PC mostly, I now play with mods. And mods make the game way more interesting. the 2 big ones I use are Tale of Kingdoms and DivineRPG. Tale of Kingdoms, is kind of a short mod which could be beaten in a quite a few hours. But the whole point of that is that you're king over your own kingdom and in order to be that king, you have to be worthy and to be worthy you have to kill enemies, save the lost villagers or kill people at this camp (I don't know the exact term for it). But I find it very useful mixed in with DivineRPG, which adds like 8 new dimensions, 150 new mobs, like 10 bosses, A LOT of new items. If you guys want to see what these mods are like. Go and watch CaptainSparklez' Modded Survival series on YouTube. He's got 51 episodes so far and he's nowhere near done yet.

If something's not rated extremely high, or rated by people at all, and talked about on a constant basis with an enduring legacy then there is nothing to contend with when deciding whether it's rated accurately or not.

I'll refrain from picking games where I would try to systematically break down the game design in a critical sense vs the critical reception, and focus more on games that have an overbearing cult following and what I feel is a false sense of entitlement (if a digital construct inside an inanimate object could have one lol)

Final Fantasy VII
Half Life 2
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Limbo
Journey

I try rarely to "hate" on anything, and I genuinely love or greatly enjoy these games, but the worship of them and media obsession is Stan-like and begins to grate on my broader sensibilities after awhile. I will try and compile my thoughts as to why from old blogs and posts where I've explained before, and edit them back in, when I can.

If I really hated a highly rated and critically acclaimed game, then I might have just stopped playing it (ie: Batman Arkham City). I won't get into big franchise stuff, that I think is poisoning the industry with overblown toxic, assembly line style HD production, because I just don't play many of them, and can't give a thorough and informed critique like I can with games I like.
