I do plan on picking up both versions of Breath of the Wild. I do have a feeling the Wii U version will be really hard to find soon after it comes out, and I do want to complete the Wii U collection in physical format.

That's fair enough and well worth it a Zelda/Wii U collection, but I highly recommend to stay away from the Wii U version. It is shockingly bad. I know it sounds like I'm exaggerating and yes I do care about frame rates (because they are important) but there can't be anyway Nintendo are happy with the Wii U version.

Welp, just heard about the paid subscription service to play online, guess I'm not getting a Switch.

Money's already pretty tight and I have no plans on paying for a service that Nintendo's previously handled like crap and a console without even a tie-in. A few lackluster exclusives isn't going to change my mind either, pretty disappointed honestly.

To be fair, we don't even know everything that the subscription will entail, or how much it will cost. Also, I feel like this complaint is part of the double standard people have for gaming these days. People asked Nintendo to modernize their consoles, and now that they have, some of the stuff we don't like has come with it. That's be to be expected, there is no perfect console experience if you aren't willing to drive over a few bumps. This kind of attitude says to me that you are counting your chickens before they hatch. See what else the systems does before you decide not to get it I say.

Exactly. You can't have your cake and eat it at the same time.

True but I don't see why they've "modernised" their consoles by adding a subscription service yet removed all aspects of what little social gaming the Wii U had. No Street Pass and Miiverse. Also the VOIP is via  a paid smartphone app.

Like...I can't. Like what Nintendo? How? I can't understand the thought process behind stuff like this.

This isn't even about having a cake and eating it, because you can have these things within the system since they are aren't mutually exclusive. I pay for Xbox and PSN services and am given all of the social gaming/community stuff I need but I pay for Nintendo Switch Online and receive less than the free service they had before?

I don't like defending Nintendo with very little information nor giving them the benefit of the doubt. I'm basing my disappointment on the facts that:
  • Previously, Nintendo's online has been awful
  • Previously, paid subscription services just to use the internet on consoles have been awful
  • We have no real information on how Nintendo plans on improving their online services beyond a few buzzwords such as "modernizing" and "friends list", nor why those improvements merit taxing the playerbase
A few years ago, only Xbox was charging to use the internet on their console, and now it's becoming the standard and everyone's cool paying for their internet twice and I just don't get how everyone's so complacent. Maybe if you are one of these people who dedicates thousands of dollars a year to gaming and paying a tax for playing those games isn't as significant, but for those of us who are living paycheck to paycheck, I don't want the cost of playing a game to increase from $60 to $120 just for a year (assuming they're ONLY charging the standard $5/mo).

Not to mention the absolutely scummy way Nintendo plans on implementing it with the bait and switch. Sure, they sell it as if they're doing you a tremendous favor by offering their "brand new internet services" for a few months and then hitting you with the collection basket, but think of all those kids who get really excited to play Splatoon 2 and then suddenly in Fall, they can't connect so they whine to their parents and of course their parents are gonna cave and pay for it so their kids don't get upset and so they don't feel like they wasted upwards of $400 on this hunk of junk. Not to mention the push for people to get it early or you'll miss out on free internet! when the console has very few games to actually play is weird and is going to leave a lot of gullible people with untouched Switches sitting in their entertainment centers gathering dust a month after launch.

That's also not even considering how god-awful Nintendo's online services have been up to now, and unless they can actually demonstrate servers that don't crap their pants every twenty seconds, having the audacity to start charging for a barely functioning service is unbelievable.

Another note is that they'll probably start charging you to access servers on their consoles that they don't even run or pay to maintain and/or force developers to integrate their own Nintendo Online service into their games. If I buy a new Monster Hunter game on the Switch, odds are I'll either A. Have to pay Nintendo Online even though Capcom runs the servers, or B. Nintendo will force Capcom to use Nintendo's servers and I'll have to pay more for an inferior service than what I was previously getting for free.

In terms of "modernizing", who fucking cares how modern the service is? What, we had a slightly less than optimal Friends system and no public voice chat before, now let's pay them $60 a year forever to implement those systems one time? Why not just make the console slightly more expensive if you're going that route? They're just doing it this way because they know that they can get away with charging users more for essentially nothing because the other systems have tried and succeeded at it. This isn't Nintendo improving or modernizing their systems, this is them sinking to the levels of their competition.

I also don't appreciate how passive aggressive you're being about how sure you are in the untested service. I used to justify using Nintendo systems due to their exclusives, but with a lackluster list of exclusives on the switch other than a Zelda game who's hype I'm not buying into based on previous experience, learning that they're going to start charging us for essentially nothing and implementing it in a somewhat scummy way is a huge deterrent towards buying one.

The Modernization is having no region locks, having seemingly more online games, having more 3rd party support, and just in general, making a system that falls more into what modern gaming is, as opposed to what the Wii and Wii U were. With confirmation that Splatoon 2, and Mario Kart 8 will be on the Switch, as well as other games with multiplayer like Arms, the Switch is already looking to have more need and use of online that than the Wii U ever did, and there's also those free NES/SNES games that will be playable in two player mode online. Also they will have online voice chat. Also, If I'm being totally honest, I hate Mii's so damn much. They were annoying to make, had only a few games where they even popped up, were basically a constant micro-transaction, which is why Microsoft got rid of their version of them with the Xbox One, and honestly, they always looked incredibly stupid. Yeah, it's a little dumb that you have to pay for the app, but say for example. the monthly subscription is 40 dollars for a year and the app costs 5 to 10 bucks. In the end, that's still cheaper than a year of Gold or a PSN account. All of that is speculation on both our ends but to say that there's another system with paid online access so therefore I'm not getting it, even though I don't know everything that entails, is very narrow-minded. At least wait to find out what's what before you dismiss it like that.

How... how were Miis a micro transaction? You mean like Xbox avatar stuff? Because that was entirely optional and very few people even cared enough to spend actual money on them. You're insulting people's skepticism while admitting that you have very little idea of what the service entails, as if we're all supposed to be automatically onboard for something that's never been worthwhile in the past and has several signs pointing towards a price-gauging experience.

You read that entirely wrong, I literally said in my last post something to the effect of, don't dismiss it before you know what it is. I never said to just blindly embrace it, but to know what the hell it is before you dismiss it. If that's too hard for you, you probably shouldn't involve yourself in anything that require time to see the full scope of it, because that's all I'm saying you should do.

There's no passive/aggressive anything coming from me, I'm legitimately annoyed at anyone who makes assumptions like you have and treats them like fact, or at least anything that comes off like that. That said, it still feels like you are assuming things without enough information to back those things up. That goes for assuming what I'm saying, and assuming that based on past experiences, things won't be better. I'll say it one last time, don't assume anything, wait until you have enough information to make a proper choice, rather than dismissing the system that might be a huge improvement in every way it needs to be, to be worth your time. If you can't do that, fine, but don't come in here starting off with a complaint about one or two small aspects of the system that we have little info on, then at mad at someone when they simply suggest that you wait until you know more before passing judgement.

But Nintendo were "modernised" before. The DS was hugely successful in and that wasn't region locked. Microsoft decided to "modernise" themselves by making the Xbox One region free. That's a positive to the consumer. I've already bought 3 Japanese exclusive games on the system.

By modernising, my main complaint is the online service. Yes the Switch will online games but it's not about the games, but about what online features you're given as a paying customer. Xbox GOLD and PSN isn't just being able to play online but also access to subscription games like Games for Gold and PlayStation PLUS. You're given "free"(they are not free but apart of your subscription service but people think they're free for some reason) as a part of your Gold subscription. There's more as well such as early access to games, free weekend plays and in some cases, full Xbox One and PS4 titles added to your library under no additional charge. Also Gold and PS Plus discounts on new games, deals , Cloud Game Saves and an online service that actually works. Combined with a solid friends lists, messaging service and, VOIP (via controller or Kinect) and ability to meet new games, view profiles etc, it's simple and has plenty for the consumer to work.

Just trying to send an invite for Smash 4 on the Wii U beyond fucking tedious. Not only was that a free service but the Switch is a paid service and has LESS social gaming than before. VOIP via a smartphone app and no community to discuss topics and games like a forum on Miiverse? C'mon, Nintendo.

[Image: 55868_1_nintendo-switch-paid-online-subs...ervice.png]

Nintendo are vague about the Nintendo subscription/"free" downloads too. It sounds like you get a "free" NES game to pay each month and then it cycles to a new game. Not like on Xbox or PSN where you add it to your library and can use it whenever you want. Also, screw NES and SNES games. The Xbox One and PS4 offer current gen titles but Nintendo are offering 2MB NES games from 20 years ago?
To even quote Reggie:
Quote:Essentially you’ve got access to that game for a period of time, and then after the month there’s a new selection. You’ll have the opportunity to buy it, but [after] that month we’ve moved on to another game.
