^I main Dr. Mario myself, and I did decent with him in the small tournaments I played with him. But I got so much flak from people saying that he is a pointless character with a poor recovery and few combos. I felt like I was always reminding people that he's actually high mid-tier (the top C if I remember correctly). But, the cape and pills are just so handy, his forward smash is fantastic, his back throw is a great finisher and all of his air moves are solid (though I really favor that back air myself, just for it's combo strength).

In any case, I feel like that video could help shut some people up.
I wonder who I'll end up liking in the new Smash. I always used Ness in the 64 version, which I'll admit was kind of cheap of me. Then I used Roy in Melee because I thought Ness was way too clunky there. I actually didn't like Brawl all that much, and never got decent with a character, but I was partial to King Dedede.

I kinda want to want to try out Palutena first, but she'll most likely be a character you have to unlock.
I have always played with Ganondorf in past games, but I think I will be playing a lot with Little Mac. He's a perfect combination of speed and power.
He's also shorter than me, which is impossible. Impossibly awesome.

Hopefully Link isn't as slow in this game. In Brawl he moved painfully slow. I wasn't a fan. Otherwise, I'll stick to what I know: Wolf/Falco.

I really hope that's not the case and Nintendo actually say "fuck it" and give us the all the characters from the start. Every fighting game has now incorporated this. SF4, Tekken, KoF, Soul Calibur etc and this mainly because of fighting game tournaments like EVO. No-one running a tournament wants to leave their console on for 20 hours to unlock Mewtwo or beat arcade mode 5 times etc. It was a novelty in the 90's but you can't do this unlocking stuff anymore.

Keitaro has uploaded more Smash Bros 4 footage featuring RedYoshi and aMSa(aMSa being one of the invitational players). However there are items and being played random stages.

What's more is that VGBootCamp are uploading videos showing case character tech and what they can potentially do: (A lot more on their channel)

I actually really liked having to work to unlock characters. It gives you time to find what characters suit you best, while you're trying to unlock everything.
Same here, I really enjoyed unlocking all the characters. Of course, the solution back with melee is simply bring a memory card with everything already unlocked.

Maybe if Nintendo would do something nice, like give a special access code to unlock all characters specifically given to organizers of large tournaments...
Wait, what am I saying? Nintendo never does anything nice for the professional fighting game community unless it's large advertising for them (see SSB4 tournament before release date).
Until Brawl I didn't mind having to unlock characters since it offered a fun challenge. With Brawl a few of them were done by backtracking in the Subspace level which I doubt most people figured out without looking it up.

  1. I found everyone on my first playthough, only because I love doing stuff 100% in games which meant getting crowns on all stages.
  2. I really did not like the way that Brawl did unlocking because it allowed you to unlock the normal way (which no one did) or by doing story mode (which EVERYONE did)
  3. Unlocking is not a bad thing and allows me to look from more ways of doing it and gives me more reasons to play the game. If everyone was unlocked at the start, I would lose interest in it too fast (which is what happened to Melee for me).

Are you sure? I thought that characters like Toon Link and Star Wolf could only be entered through portals that show up after clearing certain Subspace stages once. They were the characters I had no idea how to get.

You can unlock Toon Link by playing 400 vs matches, finishing classic mode, or by finding him in the forest level of Subspace.

Wolf can be unlocked by playing 450 matches, completing the Boss Battles with Fox or Falco, or finding him in the ruins.

Jigglypuff is unlocked by doing just about anything or finding her in the river.

Going back to your statement, yes finding them is hard, but I think most people would not be able figured out how to get most of the characters naturally without looking them up.
I liked what Mortal Kombat did, where even though you unlocked everyone from the start, story mode had you play as everybody, so it gave you a chance to get used to every character and find who you were best with. I wanted to be good with Sub-Zero, but found out I was best with Smoke and Jade. These things happen.

Skullgirls also has a pretty good system. All characters are already unocked in the versus mode but to get some of them for the story mode, you'll have to beat other characters' stories first.

Not necessarily. Nintendo have been very supportive of the Melee scene and over the last 2 years especially, have given the community a lot of attention to even making giving them the invitational spots (aMSa, MilkyTea etc). Not only last year did Nintendo decided that letting EVO support but they also ednorsed it and that was after the backlash of Melee possibly not being in EVO 2013s lineup.

But if you're running a tournament, that's just tedious. Even if you're not running at tournament and playing at your local scene it's just as annoying. This isn't the 90's anymore where it's a secret but it's a fundamental part of the metagame that's going to be played for many years to come. May as well just give us the versus characters straight away. As Skullgirls has shown, there could be a comprise between both in that you can unlock them right away or let people play through.

I also hate to be "that one guy" but Sub Space Emissary wasn't even the slightest bit fun. Bosses and Cutscenes were all that it had going for it. The rest was pointless and I don't feel like doing the same again in SSB4 just for one character.

You forget who is (partly) making the game. Nintendo (okay HAL labs but Nintendo is over seeing it I guess) has been running on the same game mechanics ever since the late 80's/early 90's. If Mario Kart can have unlockable characters since Wii, I think SSB4 can have it as well. At lest we can say that unlocking them will be more interesting than "complete all races and you unlock them all," which is almost not worth it if you do that. I also don't get the problem with unlocking them for a tournament. If you want to make sure that the game is perfect for a tournament, you have to play it for a while, which would be the best time to unlock them. Another thing that you could do is take some dude's personal game save and use that, as it will have the charicters unlocked. Unlocking them is tedious, but if I have learned anything from the internet and this forum, within the first 48 hours of the games launch, about 20 people are going to have everything in the game done with.

Subspace was kinda crap gameplay wise, but I find it alot more fun than Adventure mode in Melee. Actually I find almost everything in Brawl better then Melee.
