I actually think it's a really good game, but from what I have seen by other people, they're usually comparing it to the other Zelda games themselves as I have met people who have said "Oh, it's a good game, it's just not a very good Zelda game".
The only Zelda games I really didn't care for are (not counting Phillips) the first two original games surprisingly enough. It's extremely difficult to get through the first game without a guide and Zelda II just sort of bored me.
I never really got into the cartoony ones, but I still love the fact they are part of the timeline.
The first two hold a special place in my heart, as they are the ones I started playing when I was little. But you're right, they are so hard! If you don't know exactly what to do, then you definitely need a walkthrough.
A huge amount of people don't like Zelda II. Mind if I ask if it's gameplay or the side scrolling or what? I always liked it.
Honestly, it's just the sidescrolling, which I feel bad about. xD
I don't think I would have minded it, but considering it's one of the later Zelda games I played, I was spoiled with the 3D ones.
