Not really surprised. E3 has been a really underwhelming expo as of late and all three companies know it. Sony revealed the PS4 with a conference of their own and Microsoft plans to do the same thing! They know their conferences will not be met with any type of praise because in end, these presentations are made to cater to investors more than gamers. What gamers want are new additions to their favorite series or new games that will entice them; what investors what are series or games that will make a lot of money.

Turns out that Iwata and the rest of Nintendo don't have big plans for E3 this year and will not attempt to have a large showing like they did in previous years.
While there seems to be some who think Nintendo is doing an awful move on their part, I'm not really bothered by this. If they don't have anything really special to show, why bother trying to have a long press conference that may not do well? I'm more happy that the new President (and I do like Iwata) wants to focus more on the software instead.
However, I do have to wonder how this will impact the investors who hear about the news, added with the fact that the WiiU has not sold as well as some expected.
I hear that this will be replaced with smaller venues and a lot more Nintendo Directs. I think they feel that Nintendo Directs are much more pleasing than one giant E3 conference, especially since they never turn out well. People always seem to have great critcisms when it comes to these presentations and maybe Nintendo thought, "Eh screw it, we get a lot more praises by showing our own conferences and people only care about the library right now, so let's focus on the library."

I thinking I'm overreacting, but I this is kinda worrying. They've brought out a new console and have nothing to show. Basically turned into SEGA where they aren't a big company worth showing anything. Nicht gut
Oh and
I wouldn't worry about WiiU sales. 3DS sales were abysmal at first as well and now like 1 in 12 people in Japan own one. Nintendo is just slow at gaining momentum for there software now. There isn't even a smashbros yet.. Which is a definite system seller.
On topic: WiiU update is now live. (Faster loadtimes and navigation + other stuff)
Virtual console up tomorrow.

That's because Japan support their own country. Xbox fails there but is a success worldwide. Anything Japanese and the Japanese will blindly support it. the 3DS still isnt' that much of a seller either. Japan has a great games collection but in the west it's meh. The WiiU has terrible games or average at best, nothing really engaging.
I said this when the WiiU came out it'll end up like a Dreamcast. All of he best exclusives (especially third party) will be pointless since the other systems will get them.
The Dreamcast had games like Third Strike and MvC2 which eventually moved over to the other consoles and had more/better content. The same with the WiiU. I was going to get Ninja Gaiden 3: RE and Rayman Legends, only to find NG3: RE came out on Xbox(which i'm currently playing) and Rayman is being released for Xbox PS3 later this year (which I'll then get); meaning the WiiU failed with third party. With games like BioShock Infinite still waiting to come out on the system, it means the WiiU players are behind on release dates. When they do get games like Batman: Arkham City, they're late and often worse(the frame rate is a joke). With games like Far Cry 3 not even out for the WiiU, it just makes it the even lesser console.
As for First Party, NintendoLand is the same BS like Wii Sports and Wind Waker HD isn't anything to be that excited about since it's not a new Zelda.
Nintendo now not having a conference to showcase the WiiU/3DS games has pretty screwed them over. Extremely glad I didn't buy one on launch(and I know many others are the same). Heck, the WiiU Virtual Console is only coming out tomorrow....6 months AFTER launch. Nintendo WTF?
Ratchet and Clank Movie on the way!
When it comes to gaming stuff... reading your posts Cody is starting to piss me off.
Nintendo is still going to be at E3. They're not having a press conference because they don't want the press to take something the wrong way, like they did with the Wii U. They care more about the gamers than the press. And their reasoning for not having a press conference makes sense if you actually think about why they're not doing one.
1) Avoiding all media. They don't want the press to take something the wrong way like with the Wii U (someone said that the Wii U was an add-on for the Wii, for crying out loud).
2) Sony and Microsoft are there focusing more on their new hardware. Where Nintendo will be focusing on software. If they had a conference, it would've been overshadowed anyways by Sony and Microsoft.
3) It's just cheaper to not have a conference and share some pre-recorded stuff (like the Direct's). Why spend a few million dollars renting out the Nokia Theater when they can pretty much do the same thing, while avoiding the press, for much cheaper?
It's not like Nintendo is completely abandoning the conference. If they were, THEN they'd be making a huge mistake.
I didn't say that they weren't going to be there, but that 2 separate shows.
One is a private show with no press allowed and another is a gaming demonstration(I never said anything about them abandoning the show). But not having an hour(ish) to dedicate your company showing what they're going to be releasing is a bad move on Nintendos part.
This is the one time where Nintendo should really be pushing the WiiU and 3DS because they need to keep the systems on everyones thoughts especially during the talk about the two next consoles. Having a smaller attendance really doesn't help them in anyway.
The problem with Nintendo direct is that only those with access to Nintendo Direct can see it. The more hardcore userbase who have a WiiU and 3DS. It's not catered to everyone. Again, another problem. Plus this is Nintendo were talking about, it's nothing for that company to rent the Nokia Theater for around an hour. (Also where did you get the statistics saying it costs
millions to rent the theater?)
The WiiU being called an add-on why is that bad? It's a fine assumption to make. You don't have a series like N64 and then GameCube to Wii and WiiU. At first the WiiU does sound like an add-on due to the name distinction. Even so, we know it's not an add on but after all the marketing Nintendo has put behind the system, it still didn't reach their
5.5 million expectancy(and when did any company ever care about having something taken the wrong way? Even with the WiiU sales(and correct information) its financially failed). I highly doubt Nintendo were worried about people thinking the Super NES was an attachment for the NES
I dont get how my comments can piss you off when all I've done is point out the statistics and draw comparison to a past console. Its true games like BioShock still haven't come out for it. It's true exclusives like NG3: RE and Rayman: Legends were ported to Xbox and PS3. It's true the WiiU only got Virtual Console 6 months after launch. I don't like "ragging" on Nintendo but the WiiU is a meh console that has minimal appeal and minimal software.

Nothing is changing. The press is still going to be able to look at the games they're showcasing and report on them. It's just going to be way more hands-on so things don't get misinterpreted.

You realize that the press still reports on what happens in the direct's, right? The Directs aren't there just for the press only. They're there to focus on the gamers and the directs are open for anyone to watch. It's not like Nintendo says "If you're in the press and you watch this direct, you can't report on it." The Direct's are more straight to the point without any filler.
Millions was factoring in renting the building and having everything they use be set up. Paying the people to do that, etc. It's not cheap.

Why was it bad for the Wii U to be called an add-on... is that seriously what you're asking here? Seriously? Do you not see how stupid that sounds? "Yes, The Wii U is a $300 add-on to the Wii.... a console that launched at $250" Did the Kinect launch at a higher price point than the 360? No. Did Move launch at a higher price point than the PS3? No. Those are add-ons. Yes, Nintendo made a dumb decision with the name, but it was clear that it was a brand new console. Just idiots in the press were too dumb to not notice that. That... right there, is why they are not doing a conference this year. It's not the end of the world and Nintendo didn't say "We give up."

I wasn't calling you a liar, which is what you're implying. The way you word things makes you come off as an entitled little brat who thinks everything has to cater to him and him only. That's what's pissing me off. You post what you think (and that's fine) but most of the time, you lack logic.
Edit: I just want to say that I hope I'm not coming off as a huge jerk or anything. I see this type of behavior all the time on GameFAQ's and it's constantly grinding my gears. I don't mean anything bad by it, Cody.
Run away people! We got a mod fight over here!

Of course there is no fighting,it's called debating. And this gun be good.
Dat XCOM third person shooter.
I actually have some fairly high hopes for it, last year's Enemy Unknown was a fine piece of gaming (one of the few games that kept me glued to my seat for over 5 hours). I guess we'll see but every time I see it (which has now been 3 times in the last 4 years) it's looking more and more faithful to XCOM.
