I disagree on that one. The fact they managed to make the most predicatable ending an enjoyable one is something you don't see everyday. That's good execution.

In other news, the Trigun anime is officially 20 years old. Did you know that the anime is based off a manga by Yasuhiro Nightow? Pointing this out because the anime has overshadowed the manga by quite a margin.
